Modifications - Take advantage of dead space

I have a Salem 25RKS which I purchased used a couple years ago. My brother's trailer has a very similar layout, but takes full advantage of every space. For instance,
  • My kitchen has 3 drawers, whereas the other manufacture has 5 drawers. I know that the ducting prevents a possible bottom drawer, but the space is there.
  • Kitchen sink - Small drawer under sink could be possible
  • Space above fridge - Another dead space area used by the other manufacture.

Has anyone modified their trailer to take full use of all space available?

Yep. We built some beautiful cabinet space out of dead space in our rig. Heck, as my daughter was loading their bathroom, she asked for a screw driver to see behind a panel and found a huge empty area.

Go nuts! (But remember to watch your CCC.)

X2 on the yep. Well at least most of the empty space. I'm still working on a few other spaces to utilize.

Here's a few things I've done. Bama's Rambling Mods

Now let her know how much side money she can can make doing this.
We couldn't afford it if a dealer carpenter did it and their result would probably suck. Most are afraid to do mod work or anything out of their manf knowledge area.
But for an average skilled person with an eye for perfection and not having to support a company any town could keep you busy. And if you do cushions and momma sews, it is just starting!

Mods

On my 4th TT, all Forest River, and always find useable space. My current Cherokee 294rr has a panel below the microwave I'm in the process of obtaining a door from FR to match the color, but already use the space.

The Range and Microwave are side by side, but under the Range is a nice storage drawer. Why wasn't a drawer put under the Microwave?
There is a electric wire in the back of the space (22 inches deep) but would not be hard to put a panel to shield it, allowing the use of the empty space.

Easy enough for me Ö just add a door.

The single slide out on our Salem 233RBXL is only for the "U" Shape dining area. This is convertible to another bed if needed. Access is by either removing cushions and plywood or, by two lower doors inside the trailer.

We are wondering about better access by drawers to replace the doors and by adding exterior access hatches below the window on the slideout.

Has anyone done something similar?

We took advantage of the space over the fridge, above the top cabinet in the bathroom in our Chaparral 360 IBL and under the closet in our smaller Pioneer 19t4

I have done many mods to our 2016 2304KS. The first was flip up shelf and headboard for the Murphy bed. I've sent photos and instructions to about 35 FROGers so far. Then I remade all the crappy drawer boxes (construction grade plywood, but jointed and stapled) with professionally jointed 1/2" Baltic Birch ply. Each drawer maximum length possible. For example, the 17" night stand drawers are now 26" long. The rest of the drawers by as much as 4" longer. I added a 16" wide X 10" deep drawer into the blank panel next to the cook top. I also replaced the, cheesy, tilt-out under the sink with a, surprisinglyng useful, 7" deep drawer? I also replaced the blank panel above the fridge with a very useful cubby hole cabinet. Our previous, Dutchman Kodiak Hybrid had that, so I figured (correctly) that the blank space above our fridge hid a useful space. I also made a new medicine cabinet. Wall to wall 22 1/2" W X 30" tall X 6" deep, with 3 adjustable shelves and under cabinet lighting. My cabinet is 1 third lighter than the 18 X 24 X 3 original. After seeing another FROG posting, my next mod will be to put drawers into the 2 blank panels at the bottom of the sink/stove cabinet in the slide out.

Many thanks on the pictures, and approaches on this. Definitely some space that can be well used. I am also thinking of the dead space where the stereo is now. I can find a unit much smaller (no CDs needed) and turn that into storage as well.

I am disapointed on how loosely the heat vents are ran in the dead spaces - hoping to clean that up.

@wuffwuff - was FR responsive in trying to get drawer / cabinet door fronts to match? My trailer is a 2008, so 10 years old now. Wonder if they carry parts any more.
