Recent crash

Had a car crash into our slide room while being parked on the street. I had the slide room out to do repairs and upgrades. Anyone have any experience on getting it estimated for repair other than relying on insurance adjusters? Or what does everyone think of the damage? The slide was able to go in but it will not come out. It looks like the gears are damaged on one of the motors.Click image for larger version

My dealer gave estimate on my damage and insurance paid the claim.

I tried that route but the earliest they could do it is July 18th and would have to take it 100 miles.

Also, she fled the scene. I had to jump in my car to find and chase her down.

Sadly, that's pretty much the way it is for RV repairs. It's not like regular auto body shops where you can find one on just about every block in most city's business district.

FWIW, the shop may also be factoring in lead time for parts. Again, not like regular auto repairs with parts on warehouse shelves in every major city in the country.

Don't know how it works where you live but here where I do, the police would probably cite me for illegal parking by extending the slide while parked on the street. Our City requires a 10' travel lane be maintained at all times and that's on either side of the center line painted in the road.

I just want an estimate. They can repair it later. I was hoping they could look at it, take some pictures, and come up with a number. But I realize it is not as easy as it sounds. They probably would want to tear it apart to get an accurate cost. Because I do have sidewall damage and studs severed.

Maybe hindsight is 20-20, but I would never put out the slide while parking on the street. At least not without cones.

I agree, I have cones and usually do put them out. This time I didn't. Go figure. It wouldn't have made a difference because she admitted to being distracted and took her eyes off the road. The camper most likely would have been hit anyhow. It is also a very light traveled, low speed road, almost like a cul-de-sac.

Well......according to you, the slide went back in, but all the photos show it out.

I can’t imagine what they’ll find when they really investigate the damage.

Maybe I’m being judgmental, but the vehicle/driver that hit you....scares me for proper insurance to cover this accident.
Distracted....left the scene....texting and driving?

At least if the slide stays in, it can be transported to wherever.....unfortunately, and I’m not psychic, but pretty sure your camping season is over.

I put the slide back in after these photos were taken. We have started to rent campers to cover our already planned trips. She has a common insurance company and they are currently discussing what to do and working with my insurance. I think there is more damage than what I'm aware of.

And a dump truck full of gravel behind as a barrier

Out of curiosity, which insurance company are you dealing with, hers? Yours?

If hers, consider getting your company involved. They will usually send an adjuster to come up with their own estimate and recommend a repair shop. They then go after the other party's insurance for payment. Since the accident wasn't your fault and the insurance company will get their money back you won't (or shouldn't) get dinged on your next insurance bill.

If there is more damage than visible at quick glance the insurance company may just total it, depending.

I created a claim with both companies. I did this because I have really good insurance. My insurance right now is not doing anything except for monitoring the other insurance company on what they are going to do. We also have an attorney monitoring the situation too but not yet fully retained.

Ask your attorney if you can make a claim for a rental RV so you can continue your summer plans. You did have plans, right?

Yes, very much so. She advised us to keep track of our rentals to be reimbursed in the claim...so we did this for Memorial Day weekend but waiting to do the others until we hear more from insurance.

Update: the driver's insurance said they do not have specialty RV adjusters. They are going to rely on an estimate I get from a professional RV body shop. Took it to Luxury Coach in Marion, Ohio. Waiting on estimate from them. Ended up renting an RV for Memorial Day Weekend. Had to substitute two other trips with hotels. Looking to rent for rest of summer as I think this will take awhile to get fixed.

I got a feeling it will be written off. Judging by the damage she’s got in her car she really hit it hard. There could be lots of broken studs or screws broken off in the walls to the floor. Good luck to you and good job catching her. I’d love to have seen her face when you caught her!

Thatís how a large percentage of people communicate- what does it matter if she is texting while standing beside her car?

And OP- Iím shocked the other personís insurance isnít fighting this. I lived on a side road and it was even extra wide; I never would have extended my slideout into the road. I would park it in the wrong direction and have the slide out over grass.

Oh, she has no insurance and no drivers license.
BTW, I set orange cones out in the street when my slide is out.
