Remove Wheel Hub to Grease Bearings

I am trying to gain access to the wheel bearing grease fittings on my 2014 Salem Hemisphere 282RK. The unit has alloy wheels with large chrome hub covers. Can someone tell me how to remove the cover to get at the bearing grease fitting.

Pop that black cover off in the center of the chrome hub

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess you mean the approx. 2 inch cap on the hub cover.

If you have the solid chrome covers you will have to remove the tires to get to the black rubber cover.

Most have a removable center cap on that chrome hub. All of mine have. If you look close, there is a small spot that a flat head screwdriver can squeeze in and pop the chrome cover. Then, the rubber plug comes out. Not sure which wheels you have, but if they have EZ lube hubs, then your hub cover SHOULD have a removable snap in cap. It just doesn't always come out easy. I have broke them before.

Be super careful. Pumping grease in to those fitting can easily blow the rear seal, throw grease everywhere on you next trip and burn up the bearing. If you grease through those fittings it is best to lift each wheel off the ground and spin it as you pump grease very slowly. Of course the best method may be to pull the wheel and grease by hand.

I agree with Tom, I had my 5th wheel lubed at car dealer he blew the seals out didn't know it till down the road. I have a hand pump and used it for years without a problem. If you use hand pump use sparingly-1 or 2 pumps slowly.

As mentioned in previous posts, there is a snap on/off cap on the end of the chrome hub. Once removed, you will see the black rubber dust cap. Be sure the new grease is warm ( not hot) and pump in slowly. Do not use a pneumatic grease gun. It is also best to wait for a warm/hot day so grease is warm in the bearing as well. This will minimize the possibility of damaging the rear seal.

The EZ Lube axles are made by Dexter, and there's a Youtube how to video on adding grease. They mention both "don't use a pressure fed grease gun" and "spin the wheels while pumping slowly".
