Tire/Jack

I have a question, can anyone tell me where to find a tire wrench on a Salem Hemisphere 368 RLBHK. I am not sure if one is suppose to be included with the purchase. I failed to ask,

Thanks

Go to Wal-Mart and get a 4-way lug wrench, get the folding one for easier storage. It should cover any automotive and trailer lugs you run across.

2nd the 4 way wrench and add a 12 or 20 ton hydraulic jack to the list.

I agree with Bayou Camper, buy a 4-way lug wrench. I don't like the folding ones, though. To me, the tiny bit of extra space is worth the strength and stability of the solid 4-way.

Lug wrenches are not normally provided with trailers.

Do you have aluminum or steel wheels on your trailer? The reason I ask, is that not all lug wrenches will work on some wheels FR uses, and will require a thinner socket to fit over the lugnut and into the wheel lug. We have had several members encounter this, so you want to make sure everything works correctly before hitting the road.

I believe that the wheels are aluminum, their is limited space between the lug nut and wheel. Any particular socket and lug wrench I should purchase?

I didn't think about that, I got steel wheels. Just a standard deep socket, an impact socket will probably be to thick. On a previous truck I went steel to aluminum wheels, what I did was get a socket that has hex head on it, commonly used for spark plugs(not sure the appropriate name of them). That way I could use my lug wrench on the socket(one less thing to carry) as the lugs were the same size, just didn't have the clearance for the lug wrench on the aluminum wheels.

I picked up a bottle jack, Torque wrench, and a universal flip socket set for the trailer. I got everything from Harbor Frieght. For the occasional use it's all holding up fine.

A spare tire is usually optional. Some dealers automatically order them with the trailer some do not. If it did not have one, then a spare is also up to you to purchase.

Hi,

I carry a very heavy duty lug wrench in my bed box in case I have to change a tire on my pickup. Heavy, as in high strength steel and very thick sidewalls on the sockets themselves. Trucker quality. Never a problem getting 120 foot pound torqued lug nuts loose. Right???

Imagine my surprise when the hub caps on my 2014 Silverback prevented me from using it. And now that I think of it, the wheel design might have interfered as well, but the hubcap was enough to stall out the job. A deep 3/4" socket ans a heavy duty breaker bar solved the problem. But I can envision a lot of folks stuck by the side of the road without the right tool...

FWIW.

I carry a torque multiplier (which includes lug sockets of various sizes) and a digital torque meter which attaches to any socket wrench (combined with the torque multiplier I can torque anywhere from 30-500 ft/lbs or so). I need 450 for my deuce and I suspect that the bus type RVs require higher torque. So even though I won't be torquing that high on my camper I might be able to help someone else.

Although I think my anderson levelers will work to raise a trailer tire for changing, I carry a 20 ton pneumatic bottle jack that will operate from my Viair.
20 ton because I also use it for my deuce. I like the fact that I can raise and lower it while standing away from the vehicle.

I find that my Harbor Freight tools are better than the stuff Lowes and Home Depot are selling now. In fact I have a non-working Husky socket wrench that needs returning. Don't sell HF short.

FWIW, don't use your torque wrench to remove the lug nuts. From what I believe is a reputable information source:

Torque wrenches are precision tools. Treat them gently. Never use a torque wrench to loosen bolts except when using a beam or dial type to measure breakaway torque. Always turn the torque setting back to "zero" or less on adjustable, click type wrenches.

Question - as suggested above, do you turn your adjustable wrenches back to zero or lowest setting after use?

Yes, always. I mention the torque wrench from HF because it's affordable and accurate enough to torque trailer lugnuts.
As for breaking them loose, just turn the torque wrench up well over the original torque of the nut.
For instance, if I torqued the lugnuts tight to 90lb.ft, to remove set it on 130 and it should have minimal to no ill effect.

My Snap-on torque wrenches both said not to set back to zero. One in 3/8 drive and the other is a 1/2 inch drive. Set the 3/8 back to 5 ft# and the 1/2 back to 50#. Been working good for years that way.
I purchased the 1/2 inch drive from Snap-on as a rebuild, they had removed the switch so it couldn't be used in a left hand drive.
