Underbelly

This past summer I noticed a woven mesh like material under my salem cruise lite ripped and under that was non treated plywood. Tape only held for so long and a friend suggested that I cut all the mesh material off and paint the plywood with a box liner type paint, is this recommended?

In my opinion, that would be far better than the wrap they staple on underneath. Would probably seal a lot better and stand up to the elements better.
