365SAQ rust from OK door..and I'm in the south!

We noticed a few weeks ago, a stain in the surround on the outdoor kitchen. When we opened the door, on the bottom where the drain holes are, there was a significant amount of rust around each hole. Not thinking much of it, until today when prepping for this weekends trip, but now there is a rust stain all the way down the side of the trailer. I live in GA so the climate has no salt form wintertime use, however, this amount of rust really concerns me. I thought(may be my fault) that the door frames are aluminum, so where is the rust coming from?? Here is a pic of the rust.

If yours hasn't started this, you may be headed in the same direction!

I thought the door trim was aluminum. Maybe a fastener rusting. Stinks though. Who knows what climate it was driven in to be delivered. Salty roads?

The only thing I can think of that would be steel, would be the screws. Did you by chance wash your 5er with well water? Water with high iron content will oxidize and turn orange.

Nope.. No well water. City water only. No salt around here. The rig is now 2 years old so not really sure. The only thing I can think of that would be in the door that is steel would be the locks. If I get enough energy this weekend, I may take the barrel locks out and take a look at them to see. Other than that, I am at a loss. Will let you know what I find, just wondered if any of you had the same problem.

Duh! Never thought of the rod. Most of the ones I've dealt with have been stainless rods, so that never even crossed my mind. Thanks. I will check it out.

Monty that's how mine was in only 3 months of sitting still. In these pics I have scrubbed the rust off probably 3 times. On my outdoor kitchen moulding the screws are garbage.

I'll have to try and remember to check mine out tomorrow.

Monty - does your outside kitchen have the slam latches on it?

I have the same rust in mine from time to time. The screws that hold the slam latch into receiver on the bottom frame have rusted off on mine and caused the same stuff. My door would not close because of it. I have also noticed some of the same rust colored drippings from the right hand side. This looks like its coming from the screws that attach the piston mechanism to the outside kitchen door. I am not 100% sure but keeping an eye on it.

Looks more like coffee stains than rust. As for the stain around the screws, replace them with stainless steel.

They aren't coffee stains.

They are 100% rust stains. As stated before FR didn't use stainless on the screws used to attach the door frame and locking brackets for the slam latch. It is actually that way on all the compartments. I think it looks like coffee because the rust stains get diluted with water when it sits being stored. Just the nature of the beast. I replaced my screws with stainless! They are a lot more than the cheap stuff that FR puts in.

The outside kitchen door on our 2011 829RKSS did the exact same thing.

I removed the thumb latches and the barrel locks and found out that rain water was getting into the left thumb latch and causing it to rust. Some was actually getting all the way inside the door and running down the backside of the door.

I found the culprit to be the hole they drilled for the thumb latch not being straight. This caused the gasket to not set flush with the outside surface of the door. I just replaced the thin factory gasket with a thicker one and all's been good so far.

Hope your resolution is just as easy.

No it doesn't. May be coming from barrel locks too!

I also read regarding the screws, they can be painted before they rust to protect them. stainless steel sounds best. mine is a 365saqb sierra, 7 months old and ALL the screws UNDER the fifth wheel hitch area that hold up the fiberglass are rusted!

I noticed that the screws on my threshold on my 2013 SS were leaching a rust colored matetial, I replaced them with stainless screws. Further checking showed door hing screws going the same way, replaced them all with stainless steel screws, another FR shortcut that we need to fix.
