Fifth Wheel Tires

Did you all change out the tires on your Sandpipers for added safety?
What all did you get? What do you suggest for 43-foot fifth wheel?

I'm going to stick with the tires the factory puts on. I will inflate them to max pressure. The coach will be insured and my is a paralegal.

As part of the purchase agreement,the dealer swapped out the china bombs on ours to marathons at the next higher lr. The only place ours ran on the westlake tires was from elkhart to coldwater. interestingly, two of them were almost flat when we first looked at it.Another reason I wouldnt run them,I dont know how long they ran it with the low tires,maybe all the way from elkhart?

What kind of tires do you currently have. I had the Trail Express on mine, and kept them on for a while. At less than 3000 miles though, I lost three on one trip home. The first went at about halfway home, number two went about 25 miles later, and the third when I was about 40 miles from home. It was a nightmare. If you have anything other than Maxxis or Marathons, I'd change them. I've heard some not so good reports about the Marathons, but not a lot. And only a couple of people do I remember seeing any negative comments on the Maxxis.

This is what I don't understand with regard to the posts on tires. We owned a TT for 14 years and never had problems with tires. I kept them clean, properly inflated to max pressure and swapped them out when recommended.

Theoretically if the tires are cared for, not overloaded and are kept inflated to the maximum supported pressure they shouldn't blow out. After spending 45K+ on a fifth wheel I shouldn't have to spend another grand on new tires.

The tires you had then are not the same as what they put on new trailers now. You may not want to think about spending more $ for tires now, but I guarantee you will very soon as well as repairing damage to the trailer. It's just a fact of life whether you want to acknowledge it or not.

Nerd, listen to the Coot. He's been around since the earth cooled and has read MANY first hand testimonials. I happen to agree with him 100%. I pulled my Trail Distress Blow Max's off The Beast after 1 season, got lucky and traded them for lawn work. Guess what, three of them exploded on the poor guy's rig. Do yourself a favor Nerd and learn from others misfortune and get rid of them before they delay or ruin a vacation.

When was the last time you bought a set of tires?

My factory tires went at the same time. One blewcout causing damage to my RV. Put on the spare and made it to a tire dealer. Out of the remaining three, two were seperating at the tread about to blow. They has 2000 miles on them.

Changed the Superior Power Tow Max stock tires for Good Year Marathons. When I took them off after 1 season 2 had bead failure and one had a bubble inside, No visible failure till you remove them. Forest River, if you treat them fairly, work through your local dealer will pay for part of them if you have a failure.

I never had an issue with my Carlisle tires on my old TT (2005 vintage). Pulled it for 5 years on the same tires. But with my 5er, it was about 2 years. I always kept my tires inflated properly, and I was never overloaded. I even checked the other tires when the first one blew, and they were all good. Same after the second one blew. I crawled home after the third one blew. My 5 hour trip took over 14 hours due to this triple blowout. And probably close to 5K in damage and 4 months or so in the shop. So, you can listen to experience, or trust theory.

So far no problems with the Maxxis I have on there now.

I understand why the other tires blew after the first one did, the increased load on those tires could cause that. Once you have one blow, you would at least need to replace the other tire(s) on that same side.
And to be clear, I'm not arguing with anyone, I'm just wondering why there aren't tire demonstration marches in Elkart and Goshen, IN. If this is such a widespread problem. I guess I will plan on adding tires to my list of things to buy.

Unless the blown tires rim was actually suspended in air, the load on the other tandem remains unchanged. The load is still carried by the blown tire and rim. The only thing I will add is I had roughly 3000 miles on my new 5ers tires and they were fine. However, after setting in the driveway for 2 months this winter 2 of the 3 were bubbled through the beads. My guess is no one is demonstrating because most have figured the cost into the cost of a new camper.

I have a sandpiper 365 saq. I run goodyear G614 tires. They are great tires and can handle the weight of the trailer. The crap tires that came on it were weight wise pushed to the max.
