TV mud tires for pulling 353QBQ?
I'm torn, it's time to get new tires on my TV. I current have 35" A/T tires on the stock 17" rims on a SRW 3500. They were D rated tires and they just didnt hold up to the pressure on the tread structure, meaning I was breaking chunks off. I just don't like the way they look either.
I was thinking of moving up to a 20" rim and a stronger E rated mud tire. Lots of choices here, but not sure about the towing experience with the make up of this kind of tire and rim combination.
Our camping radius is about 8 hours in Oregon/Wash, and don't plan to travel farther until the kids get a little older. So I spend most of my time commuting to work and back which is only 5 miles away from home.
Any recommendations from experience?

A buddy has 20" copper stt's on his f350 and has had really good luck with them. No much road noise, wear good and carries the weight without any problems.

I try to talk your self out of mud terrain tires. Especially if will be hauling your trailer. I know the mudders look really good but unless you will be in the mud or rock crawling or on the trails all the time and not much highway and which you may. But if not dont get them I think you won't like them for driving down the highway and for pulling the camper. I was the same way I had chrome rims with BFG mudders on my Titan. Now my Titan has the stock rims back on with with Michelin AT2 tires load range d and its the best thing I have ever done.
And if you were chunking tires that has nothing to do with it being a load range d tire you could have the same tire in a E range and it would have done the same thing. That the the way the tread compound is not the load range.

I would consider Nitto Terra Grapplers, Hankook DynaPro AT/M or Toyo Open Country's in the size you want. They are not mud tires but an A/T and would be much better suited to your use and all 3 have a very nice profile and are all rated very good. I had 285 70 17 Hankook DynaPro's on our 08 2500 Megacab 4x4 and they looked very nice as that is the size the power wagons come from the factory with. These tires are all very stable and quiet. FWIW I live in the country and drive abt 40 -50 miles a day on dirt roads that get very muddy in the spring and these type of tires have not let me down, slow and steady wins the day in the mud. BTW you really should be running LR E tires on that thing.

i have been running bfg mud terrains for almost 20 years and i am on my 3rd set. i have a 31b2 silverback ceadar creek fifthwheel that is 38 fett long and 14000 lbs. the tires are great on the highway. just make sure you buy e load range. i have had many friends run cheap mud tires and they just fall apart. i get around 150,000 miles to a set.

A, really what are your bfgs made out. 40000 out of any mud terrain is good. Haha heck it's not even possible to get this out a car tire let alone any truck tire. Especially with the weight of a camper on the back. I am not trying to bash here but this info has to be false and others looking to buy tires shouldn't get this impression.

Load range D tires are probably less than the axle rating on the truck...should be above.

20's will LOWER the tow rating of your truck. 17's are better and a load range E will be good. I had 33k + on my GY tires with about 8k miles towing. Still had reasonable tread left, at least another 10k. Look at the specs for your TV and you can see how different size tires affect your towing ability.

i have towed with my trail grapplers on......they are nitto 35-12.5-20's ...works fine, is a lil loud, and dont get as good mpg....they look awesome tho....LOL...this is an LT E rated tire....3100lbs at 65psi....i love these tires btw....
normally i just swap the stock 20's on ...better gas mileage....

That's still 93000 miles, I'm sorry, but I find it very hard to believe you can get that kind of milage out of any tire. Even on my car it's hard to get 90000 KM out of them.

I got 90K out of a set of BFG long trials that came OEM on my 2500 Ram. That is all highway miles. I have 45K on my current Hankook dynapro ATM and think they will make 80K.
As to OP - you have gotten some good advice here. get a good qaulity load range e tire. and many people report that their towing experience on 17's is better than 20's.

I use mud tires on my diesel trucks, with the heavy front end and driving in pastures and off road a lot. I have 295-70-18 (34.5"tall) nitto trail grapplers, load range E- 4080Lb single @80psi. I put these on in feb. only have about 5k on them. Before them I had 285-75-16 (33.2" tall) Hankook Dynapro M/T. I didn't rotate and the rears were @ about 2/32-3/32 and fronts @ little over half tread at 19,000 miles, and 3years old.
My have not seen tires "chunk" out unless they spend considerable time on gravel roads or are fairly old. But alignment and cheap tire compounds could also possibly cause it.
