Insurance

Just purchased a unit from a private person. He did not have a tag on it as he never put it on the road. Is this legal in MA? I also need an insurance agent in the Berkshire region near Pittsfield.

Might be a sticky situation. Did you receive a title and a Certificate of Registration? Unless he put the unit in storage, there MAY be several years of past registration fees due to the State it resided in. It COULD be even a bigger can of worms if he didn't register it when he initially purchased it and never paid the State sales tax on it. Best bet for "solid" answers it to call the DOT in MA or the State you live in.
Good luck!!! Let us know how you make out!

PS--why not use your insurance agent assuming you have one for your auto, home, renters insurance, etc?

" Let us know how you make out"-------Interesting how some folks NEVER give any response to those of us that take the time to help them! Just happens to be a "pet peeve" with me, hope this isn't considered a rant.

I do intend to put insurance it. The park also requires it. I just don't know how MA handles the tag thing. I'll call and find out. Here I Florida it must always have a current tag.

He(seller) has to have either a title or the mfg certificate of origon .If a title,it will show the sales tax paid, not so on the coo. The title will also show any lienholders. Do not give up any $ if you dont have this paperwork!

OK Guys. Step back and take a breath. Reread to op. The question is not about tittles, registrations, and paperwork or what the previous owner did. I will have all in hand including bill of sale on WED. The question is Does MA require a trailer sitting permentently in a park not used on the road to have a yearly licence plate or sticker.

I'm taking deep breathes, believe me! I agree, make that 1 phone call to the DOT and you'll have your answers!

You might also want to check your park's rules on this.
Our trailer is on a seasonal site but the park still requires that it be currently registered and they have you sign off on the park rules and regs every year as a condition of staying there. Otherwise you could be evicted with no refund for your seasonal fees.

I just assumed there might be a MA camper here with the info. Sorry I bothered you.

PS: The info would not come from DOT. The info would come from the County Tax Collector's office where it's titled.

Thank you for that information. Sounds like you're half way there, you know WHERE to call. Now all you need is the phone # and to do it! Best of luck!
