I tow a ultralight Rockwood with a properly outfitted Half Ton truck. Which 5th wheel are you looking at?

Oh yeah. There are a lot of 5ers in the half ton range. Just watch for low (LOW) pin weight.
I'm on my second fiver with a tundra.

Wildcat 5ers may not be the best choice to be towed by 1/2 tons. Even the eXtraLite series may exceed the payload and other weight limits of a 1/2 ton truck. Just my 2c.

Based on extrapolating from the dry weights (see specs), that's going to have an actual loaded pin weight upwards of 2,200 pounds (see calculator).

You need a truck that can carry that, the truck, the weight of the hitch, you, your spouse and family and still be within your GVWR (or, depending on your decision- slightly over).

Tow a 2012 Flagstaff 8528RLSS with a 2005 Silverado Ext cab, 5.3L and a 3.23 rear end, Air Lift air bags, GY Wrangler LT LR E tires. No problems towing 55-65 mph. Get in the truck lane in the mountains and can stay with most semis and pass a few. Ave. around 9.5-11.2 mpg.

My next TV (hopefully soon) will be a F-150 Ecoboost, 4X4, Supercab, 8' Box, 3.73 rear end. Advertised payload of 2400 lbs with Max towing and HD payload packages.

We have the wildcat 312bhx and used to tow it with a 2008 F-250. We ended up putting air bags on it because it would squat to much for our comfort. Have since traded in for a F-350 and I know it is gonna pull great. I would never think of pulling it with a F-150.

I would think that the key to this would be the rear axle rating. Add your weights up and see where you come in. I would not exceed that rating even if you can pull it. You should also look at an Air Lift System

Here are the specs on my truck 2012 ford f-150 ecoboost super crew 5 1/2 ft box GVWR 7200 LBS. 1359 payload 11200 towing capacity do you think I can pull safely the 312bhxs-OK which has a dry pin weight of1720 and a dry camp weight of 9110? I do have Firestone air bags under the truck

No, your dry pin weight is 361 over your TV payload...and then you have to add the weight of passengers and other items that will be in the truck. Air bags do not give you more payload capacity.

I can't imagine starting with a setup that is 25% over dry weights for both the truck and camper from a payload perspective. Never mind that as you load the camper, that pin weight is only going to increase- as I said before, based on extrapolating the dry weights, you're looking at a likely 2,200 pounds of pin weight.

Never mind that the 1359 payload gets reduced as soon as you sit in the truck, add the wife, add a hitch and anything that you add into/on the truck. I think you mentioned in a previous post that you have a scaled weight of 5,980 pounds. Which means you have a realistic payload of 1,220 pounds. I think that was for a bumper pull travel trailer, so you'll likely need to add weight for a fifth wheel hitch. Did that include passenger(s) or anything that you normally carry in the truck bed?

Something to consider is ditching the 4x4 option. We did and have not regretted it - rides better and the 1,500 extra lbs of 4x4 gear means better ride and gas milage

That's a good point although with the winters here 4 X 4 is a nice feature to have. As it turns out the HD payload package in the F150 Ecoboost is a rarity here and there are no trucks in Canada with the specs that I listed. We could get one factory ordered but it will take at least 12 weeks to get. We have decided to go with a F250 with a payload of 3100 lbs which gives us room to upgrade the 5er down the road if we chose to.
