Axle spacing

Odd question, but I have noticed when placing my xchocks on my 262bhxl that the distance between tires is on each side is different.

The TT seems to tow fine, just curious if this is something that will create issues down the road etc

Youroo (says) the (distance) is the (same) even if you (measure) them as (different).

The distance between my tires is a little bit different also. It tows good, and no excessive tire wear, so I haven't worried about it over the last 6 years.

This disparity between tire gaps side-to-side is one of several things I will have checked when I take mine to my dealership tomorrow. It MAY be within specs but it is definitely different side-to-side.

I was going to have ours checked as well, it's at north texas rv for collision repair and they are checking if they can complete the warranty work as well, figured I would see if it was 'normal' or should be concern before I even asked them

North Texas RV in Sherman? I drove past there this morning. The RV park behind them looks full.

You cant really get an acurate measurement by measureing the tires. The only way to really know is measure the front to back space between the centerbolts, then the diagonal distance between the centerbolts, then the distance between the front axle center bolt and the center of the hitch ball,or pin,on bothe sides. all of these distances should be equal from side to side. This is what a frame shop calls "trianglelateing".I suppose the factory would say these distances should be + - 1/4 inch but I would want it closer than that,+ - 1/8 inch max. Keep in mind that if one distance is + 1/4 and the other is - 1/4,it is actually 1/2 " out of square.

I've noticed that the distance between my tires changes slightly, depending on how the trailer sits. I always assumed it was a function of the torsion axles. As the torsion flexes, it moves the wheels slightly.

But I'm not a frame/suspension/whatever expert so I might be wrong.

The best way to measure is spindle to spindle, it's the only accurate way. Some like to measure wheel to wheel, just make sure one is not bent.

Spindle to spindle is a slightly more accurate way to do it. When I had my fab shop we buit quite a few special purpose trailers from scratch, with up to 4 - 7000# axles. When the frame is being laid out and tacked up,it is upside down on a frame jig. This makes it easy to square up the spindle ends and take measurements. After it built and right side up with a body and hubs on it,this is next to impossible. All frame shops that I ever saw use spring centerbolts as a reference while straightening and adjusting any vehicle /trailer frames, unless there are laser measureing points on the unit being worked on.But,to each his own!

edit) It is assumed that when a frame is being measured, by any means,it is completely level in both planes, with the load removed from the springs. On a tt or 5er this could be done with 5 bottle jacks and preferably a laser level.

I think you mean "triangulating." Comes from "triangulate" meaning to "form into a triangle or triangles" as in "the brackets triangulate the frame"

Is your unit springs or torsion axle?

Our last camper had torsion axles and both tires were spaced evenly (using X-Chocks you can tell right away) On our new Wildwood Heritage Glen I find that the tires on left side are closer together than on the right side, so now I keep the X-Chocks on the same side so that I do not need to open or close it before installing. I also noticed that my rear axle is slightly askew as the left rear tire "sticks out" in relation to left front tire by about 3/4" ~ 1" and correspondingly the right rear tire is inboard of the right front tire by about the same. (tho it could be the front axle that is off but when looking at it the rear axle seems to be off) When I had it in for insurance and warranty work this past summer I explained both problems and had them do a check on it, they came back with perfectly normal. Tires are not wearing odd at all, trailer tows straight as an arrow with no weird habits so I am rolling with it.. (pun intended)
