Can I hang a generator under our 24ft?
We have a Wildwood 24ft trailer.
Has anyone ever seen a generator hung under it that was large enough to run the air conditioning? I am not a fan of having to carry around a portable generator every place we go.

You are not clear, but is appears that you are looking to travel with the generator under the TT. I doubt that you will have sufficient clearance under a TT to mount a generator. In addition, I would not want a portable generator running under my TT. I would not do it.

I guess every place you go you should then have a pedestal...
Some owners have had a carry-all of some type welded to the frame/back bumper and put their inverter/generator there.

Sorry that I wasn't very clear. I would like to hang a non portable type generator under my TT. Maybe something made by Onan. It seems like there is enough space and ground clearance?

I dont of any standard TT that this would be possible.

Most TTs have boxes installed into the front storage and this is where you would mount the gen. If it isnt already installed from what I hear it is not an easy task for a DIY job (no experience myself but looking at TT where it is already there I wouldnt want to tackle it) You will need more than the genset, fuel lines, tanks, fill port, etc....

I had one hung under the rear of my 5er it was an onan and installed by the dealer. It was propane. My 5er had large 16 inch tires and was pretty far off the ground. Never had any issues with clearance and it looked like it was installed by the factory. Later RJD

Two concerns - Heat? Could it make the trailer hot? Maybe cause a fire?
- Fumes? Exhaust stink up the interior? Carbon monoxide give you headaches? Or worse?

I have a 250# listed rack on the rear of my 5er. I'm going to have a box made and welded to it for the genny, vents and all. Similar to a truck tool box. Would be interested in a pic of what you did though...

You could probably do it, but, I would want a super exhaust system made up for it. If you run it with the stock little tailpipe the exhaust will find a way to come inside your camper and kill you. I have a 4,000 kw Generac made for a motor home that is very compact, but, you would still need around 18 inches for it and then maybe another foot to the ground to be safe. If you decide to do it, I will give you a deal on my Generac, brand new in the box, never been run, $500

There is a Fiver owner on Vancouver island that had a bumper extension fabricated for his Rock-wood and has a Portable Yamaha inside. I can not remember his forum name. It was well done and looked profesional!

OP has a 5-er. The storage rack you mention only works on "Bumper pulls".
Downside to mounting under or in compartments on any TT is that often the only available space is next to the sleeping area. Not where I'd want a generator located if I planned on napping on a hot afternoon.

Not that I need to do it because my 3kw generator is bolted to my truck bed, but I am intrigued. These things are not light weights. What does that extra weight on the farthest point from the hitch do to the towing configuration? Does pitch the truck nose down further, or do you compensate somehow?
A gene designed to run under cover/in a locker would be nice, but hanging a regular unit under a TT, not my idea of a good thing.

Mike, the OP has a TT, not a 5th wheel.
I think many are assuming it's a 5th wheel.

My 3500W generator/inverter weighs just over 100# filled with fuel. If I mounted it on my rear bumper it would probably reduce my tongue weight by maybe 30# - 40# due to the positioning of the axles. If I was that fussy about my tongue weight I could compensate by just putting an extra 8-10 gallons of water in my tank.
A larger weight shift occurs when one uses up the water in their fresh water tank Usually in front of the axles, and is now hauling much of that water in the holding tanks, often mounted behind the axles. A 40 gallon tank represents almost 350# or over 3 times what a portable generator weighs, as a rule.

Not a problem for me. Like many models the FW tank is at the absolute rear of the 5er. I carry 60 gallon at all times.

Sorry to say this conversion was done in 1999, camper long gone and no digital pics available. The camper was a Golden Falcon tho. Later RJD

I own this unit and it will run the A/C but barely. It's the start up that really tests a generator. Far as mounting it on my trailer, I thought about a bumper rack and I never got around to it. It's light enough to pick up...and set it farther away from your camper. I imagine if you have a genny hanging on a 24 footer you will really hear/feel it.
