A lot of people use both electric and propane for a faster recovery to temp then the propane will drop out automatically and the electric side will then stay on until the temp drops and then they will both kick in again, good for taking showers with a 6 gal tank.

Yes, after 30+years, I did it last fall, drained the tank, flushed it and when we got to FL, wondered why the electric side didn't work and then the light came on, hey Dummy you didn't turn the 110 off when you cleaned the tank. SO, replaced the element and both hi limit switches to 140 degree ones and like the higher temperature water. Takes less hot water for everything.

I don't trust myself, and turn the outside switch off every time as we are breaking camp and then drain the HW heater.

You drain the HW everytime you break camp? I only drain once a year, when I winterize it for the season. At that time you can be sure I triple check that the switch is turned off.

Might be the water we tend to get at campgrounds, but I find it has a bit of an odor if left in the HW tank for long. If are just moving to another camp or back out in a few days then no but otherwise, yes every time.

Can't hurt to drain it, plus keeps you from hauling around an extra average 40 lbs of weight (if you have a six gallon tank).
I am assuming you dump it with the sewer, or do the parks allow it to be drained on the ground? I stay at one park that would probably ticket you, if you drained it on the ground.

I've always drained it on the ground, prior to heading to the dump site.
Never even a raised eyebrow as it's not even grey water.
What would you call it, White Water?

Maybe not the best spin to call it Whitewater. Got a lot of people in trouble in the late 80's, early 90's.
