rear bike rack ideas

We just bought a wildwood x-lite 262bhxl. on the back of the trailer is a drop down grate to carry various items. There is what appears to be a receiver mount to accept a bike rack. The issue with this is when the grate is down that receiver is facing up. If the Grate is put back in the upright position the spare tire covers the receiver not to mention its several feet high at this point.

what have others done? My last trip I simply laid the bikes down and strapped them to the Grate. I don't find this very useful of that space.

I can take some pictures if that would help

I'd continue as you already did, bikes on the grate.
Please do not mount a bike rack back there receiver or not.

Ours has a post that you install to support the bikes when on the rack.

At a minimum, you run risk of losing the bike . Don't ask me how i know... secured or not the bikes will bounce around on the mount.

Or your bikes launch into the back of your camper causing severe fiberglass damage. Ask me how I know.

I think I have the same cargo grate. On mine there is a 1 7/8" post that is laid down flat on the grate and secured with a pin clip. You unclip the post and it then stands up into that hole you think is a receiver pointing up. The intent I believe is that the bikes ride standing up on the grate with their seats and crossbars securely strapped to the top of that post. For extra security I also use buckle straps at the bottom that wrap the entire grate tray and go across where the pedal thingy meets the seat post. Basically secure bikes at top and at bottom. I may look for a bicycle carrier with upper extension arms that I can fit in to the hole to replace the simple post.

Anyone who doesn't have one of those rear cargo/platform bike rack dealies and wants one. You can have mine if you will simply pay the freight. (Never used--brand new)

hbillsmith is correct: that rack is suitable for bikes. Secure the bike wheels/tires, then use 2 ratchet straps per bike from the bike frame down to the rack. Forget about the post that fits into the square socket in the rack. Turbs and others are right: it's a rough ride back there, so check often. Better yet, install a rear view camera.

I use this set up(without the bike clamps) for my Blue Honeywagon and a cooler-works the best!!
