Tow hitch in the front???
Has anyone attached a tow hitch to the front of their pickup? I was talking to a guy at Camping World about how tight my parking spot was at home. His suggestions was attaching to the front - maneuverability is much better. Never heard of this....

This is pretty common for those needing extra maneuverability.

So, Lee, this is something you would recommend? I'm just wondering about the suspension. For the small amount that I'm going to need to actually hook up to the front i doubt if it would be damaging. But, hey, why not ask first! Thanks for your reply.

Trailer Valet XL is what I am going to get. It works with a hand crank or drill, and has built in brakes.

Every one of the trucks I have owned had a front hitch. Makes moving a trailer in tight spaces much easier, even in snow, sand, or soft soil. With that said it doesn't do much good now that we have a fifth wheel. I did use it on our boat the other day.

Thanks Sc00ter. Appreciate the reply. The 'Valet" is $600. A hitch is about $150. Let me see........Hitch it is for now...

I had one on a previous truck for moving my boat around. My boat didn't have the tongue weight that my TT has, but you aren't going to be moving your trailer at high speed or long distance. The plus side is that you can also use the front hitch to carry bikes.

I don't think you will be disappointed. I used curt hitches on my old F150 and my Jeep Cherokee. I went a different angle with our dodge truck. The front mount hitch would block some of the cooling for the radiator/transmission cooler, something I wasn't keen on. I found a 2" receiver that replaces a tow hook on the front of the truck. The hitch is offset but that allows me to see around the side of the trailer I am pushing.

I have two front mounted receiver hitches mounted on my F350 FX4. I use the lower for a step that is mounted in the hitch for easy access to the engine compartment. I also have my front license plate mounted to the hitch step. The other I use either for my receiver winch if needed or for moving around my 20" utility trailer.
As for using the front hitch to move a travel trailer I don't know that I would. Considering that the receiver hitch is right at the end of the front bumper and that the trailer tongue is maybe 4' long. I would think that the ability to see around the trailer would be greatly blocked by the width of the trailer itself.
Also be sure to check the weight ratings of the front hitch, many times this will limit your ability for some uses. I for one would not place the weight of a travel trailers tongue weight on the front of my truck.
There is also a learning curve to parking a trailer using a front hitch.
Many of the manufactures front receiver hitches are all the same only wearing different brand names on the box. One hitch that is different from the standard run of the mill is the Bodiak hitch. There hitch mounts to the front OEM tow hooks of your truck. Well constructed, great finish, a few available options and excellent customer service. It can easily be mounted and taken off if so desired in less than 10 minutes.

Not sure. I have a very tight driveway and am going to have to swing the trailer over a small retaining wall, so i can still access the garage. I will post how it works once I get it all in. Should be about mid-December.
