Truck Rear End Sway While Towing

Also the Cooper Discoverer HT Plus are not LT tires. They are XL tires. They have a load range of 119T and a reinforced sidewall.
I got them on sale for $608 vs about $1100 for LT for my truck.
My problem is the tire size of my truck. The LT tires have a limited selection. 275 60 20.
I have been well pleased with them until we got the newer truck. However. I do feel that the majority of my issue is the different suspension.
Our TT is a big winds ail going down the road. The height is 13ft 2 inches so it catches every breeze anyway.
Before I went to the equalizer WDH 4 pt sway control. I was towing down I65 and a flea sneezed on the side of the road. I thought I was going to get pushed to the median 😜

I had the same truck and liked the ride and all but only used it to tow 7000#. It was a 2012 also used the equalizer 4 point. The 28' TT pulled gave no problems even with the 20" tires. May be imagination but opened Windows on both sides slightly which made passing semis less noticeable. When time for a new truck bought the F250. That was costly as a new 5er came next. �� I've been trying to figure anything besides your TT is longer and heavier but come up blank. You seem to have everything covered now and should be in great shape. Hope to here problem eliminated next trip

I'm not knowledgeable about the Cooper tires. I recently installed the Nitto Dura Grappler 275/60-20. There are not a lot of choices when getting 20" tires E rated tires but these are. Max tire load is 3,415 each. Made in Japan. Total cost was $1,208 out of the door

I've used Nitto tires on my other truck (Ram 2500 CTD) and never had a problem.

I told my wife when we traded that I wanted a 3/4 ton truck. She said NO!!! She said that if I got a bigger truck that I would go get a bigger TT or most likely a 5er. Yep she knows me too well. Lol

Exactly what happened here. Like the 5er so well thinking of a 1 ton real soon as a bigger 5er may be in the forecast but we really like the one we have. I just want a new truck again. You this one is 6 months old. Crazy but have done it before.

I've had everything except a Class C. Even thought the Class A would be the end of it. Realized in my mind at least, nothing better than a 5er. The only way I'd go back is if 3 stairs to the bedroom became a problem, then either another Class A or quit.

Too much weight distributed to the front? Are your tires inflated to the max psi?

5 lbs shy of max weight. Front end has 1/2 inch rise when hooked up so should be about perfect

X2 with OC. When I started towing my first 5r I had some sway at the rear of my 1/2 ton. Changed all shocks from factory to Bilistein 5100 with no help, same when I added air bags. All that did was help with the squat. Changed the tires from factory P rated to Cooper E rated, ran them at 70 psi when towing and never looked back, all sway disappeared.

Had similar issue. Have same truck. Switched to 10 ply tires (Coopers) and keep them at 80psi. I also had Air Lift helper springs installed. After some adjustment in my WDH I was also able to almost eliminate the sway in the rear of our TT. I do have a question though... With a 30' TT and the go ahead from the boss on the new truck, why would you not go with a 2500? Stiffer suspension and better tow ratings would seem like a no brainer. Unless, like us, the funds don't match the wants.

The funds always play a big part. I wanted. 3/4 ton but the wife threw the brakes on. Said if I got a 3/4 ton then I would want to get a bigger camper. She knows me too well 👍😜

BUT ~~~ that truck and a 5er wouldhave eliminated all thought of sway.

So i contacted the tire manufacturer - they reckon the tires i have on my truck currently *Michelin LTX A/S* are passenger rated tires and have a max capacity of 2068 per tire. They recommend upgrading to LT tires. Irrespective brand - is this the recommended way to go to try and eliminate some of the sway?

Yes. I went from stock Goodyear passenger tires to Cooper light truck 10 ply tires. Inflate to mfg suggested 80psi. The sway from the back of the truck virtually disappeared and that was being transferred through the TT.

Check your trailer tires carefully. Last week I experienced trailer fish-tailing when ever I got to 63ish mph. 148 miles into my trip, my right rear tire blew out. Put on the spare, noticed that the fish-tailing went away. My tires were at their max cold pressure just before we left and there was no visible deflation or heating when I checked them at the only rest stop we took. I suspect the tire had a weakened sidewall from what was a minor curb strike.

Eyeguy, I have the same truck and same hitch, (which btw for everyone else,, IT HAS A SWAY BAR, so why would you want to add another, like on those POS chain wdh's) and I added the airbags and they helped out a lot but still had that same "wiggle" so when it was time for new tires I spent a little more and got the Michelin ltx/at tires, they are E rated and 10ply. I went up in size to a 275 65 20. They made all the difference in towing. I tow a 8600 lb trailer with 980lb tw, yes this has been weighed and pulls great but pulling a tall and long trailer you'll always feel the side winds as you have lots of sidewall (basically a sail).. So while the airbags do help, you'll find the LT tires will help even more. Hope this helps some...

I installed airlift 1000 bags and ran 20lbs. We are camping now. Lol boiled about 200 miles yesterday and the bags helped a ton. I am going to look into LT tires next week though
