Was checking propane bottles and did not find any gauge or way to tell when propane bottle empty. Turned both bottles on prior to trip but do not know how much I have used. Any suggestions?

THey have all kinda of gadgets out there. Is anyone better then the other I don't know I bought a gage that go's in between the bottle and supply line. The problem I found is that it will fluxuate with temp more then the gas. The only true way to know is to weight the bottle. Some say pour hot water down the side and you will see the level, tried that to.

If your propane system has automatic changeover there should be a sight glass on there that tells you when the first one is empty. Likely is green dot when full that will be orange if empty. If its a simpler system then it will draw from both tanks equally if they are both open. Best to close one in this case and it will only draw from one. Therefore you know when one runs out and you can turn the other one on and refill.

I occasionally look at my changeover. When I see it not green, turn the knob, and take the empty bottle to get filled.

But they are not real accurate, they give a pressure reading which does fluctuate with the hot and cold not the actual level of gas that's in the cylinder. If you take the tank off and put it on a bathroom scale and empty 20lb cylinder should weigh around 18 pounds empty and 37-38 pounds full.

X2 on the changeover system (if you are so equipped) this is the best course.

Gages are not that accurate -- more of a ballpark estimator. A auto changeover system is IMO best - you know the tank is empty and on the next supply run you can refill it.
