I am very late in my reply, sorry... just saw your comment today.

I used 3/4" screws. I counterbored the wood (and predrilled the hole) so that the screw only goes about 3/16" into the paneling. The goal was to keep the shelf from sliding, not to support any weight. That is also the reason that I only put the screws in one board.

All the weight is transferred down to the floor of the cupboard.

The entire assembly was designed to fit tight in the space, so the support boards are already held against the paneling. It might not have moved anyway, but I wanted to be sure it wouldn't vibrate back-and-forth and scratch up things.
