Anti-Freeze freezing up?
I winterized my fifth wheel,blew out all the lines etc.pumped in a substantial amount of r.v a/f and checked the trailer yesterday and the a/f I put in the toilet to keep the seal wet is a heavy slush..I bought the a/f from Canadian Tire,and no there was no water mixed with the a/f...what the heck is going on here? Can anybody help explain this,maybe cheap a/f,I paid about 4.00 a gallon for it!

I just returned from the store to talk to them about this product,after reading the back label,it said this product will freeze,but will not burst you water lines...having a hard time wrapping my brain around this one!

I have also heard that the anti freeze will get 'slushy' as you mentioned. This has been brought up before and with all those that are using it, I have never heard of anyone having a problem. Just the nature of the stuff.

I'm no scientist, but I do know that water expands when it freezes. Most other liquids contract. Even if if the antifreeze froze, it will not expand and bust pipes. At least that is how I hope it works. Been doing good so far.

It survives -35 to -40 out here and never causes any issues.

The only caution I've gotten from my RV dealer is to make sure that you don't leave any in the filter housing as they tend to be brittle enough that even the slushing up of the antifreeze can cause small cracks in them that you won't find until the spring.

I also leave all my interior faucets cracked to allow air to escape in the event something expands. I don't have the slushy A/F but it rarely goes below 10 F here. So it may not get cold enough to slush. Time to read the bottle I guess!

 I don't know if ours ever slushes up but I've been using the same stuff for quite a few years with no problems oh and yes it does get 30to 40below zero here for weeks at a time winter sucks

There are two flavors of RV anti-freeze - one with ethanol and the other with propylene glycol. The former is the cheapest and does the slushy thing. It's also flammable. The latter is typically twice the price and stays relatively fluid. I picked up the propylene glycol variety, made by Prestone, from Crappy T @ $9 and change for a jug.

I have been winterizing for a few years, and have friends that have been doing it forever, and no one has had pipes burst from the antifreeze. I would not worry about it.

But is the stuff with propylene glycol safe for drinking water systems? Just curious....

Propylene glycol is considered non-toxic and in fact is employed in the food industry. I dealt with this product some years years ago as a OHS safety manger and as such can confirm that it's considered it safe for drinking water systems provided the proper flush and prep is carried out for said drinking system.
