Anyone towing Flagstaff 5er with a 1-ton?

Ok, I'm in the 5yrs to retirement mode. DW and I plan to give fulltimeing a try when I hang it up. Plan is to get a 5er up to the task when I am done working. I need to upgrade my truck from a 3/4 ton gasser to a 1-ton desiel. Want to make sure it's paid off before I retire. My question is if any of you are currently towing a Flagstaff with a 1-ton 4x4? Is there any truck to trailer fit issues I'll need to address? I know a 1-ton sits higher than a 3/4 but is it significant enough to cause any problems?

You should be good to go with the 1 ton.

Thanks JohnF. I have read on this site and others of having to lift their 5er to accommodate their tow vehicle height. When I upgrade my truck to a 1-ton that is one less thing I don't want to have to worry about. We plan to keep the Flagstaff till time to pull the trigger on fulltimeing.

Do you have the 5er now? Maybe measure and see, or even do a test fit. Your buying a 60,000 vehicle, they can spare a few minutes to make sure it works I would hope!

Yes, we currently have the Flagstaff. I'll do a bunch of measuring as part of my vehicle research. I'll also see what adjustments can be made with my current Reese hitch.

Have had 2 Flagstaffs and used a 1ton GMC 4x4 long bed. Perfect set up and 0 problems.

Love this rig. Former Yukon Denali 6.2L gas pulling 35 ft travel trailer. New rig is absolutely a dream. New 5th pulls level and smooth with the trailer saver Hensley BD-3 and a Trail Air pin box. The combination is totally smooth. Even in 25mph wind or higher you don't feel a thing except your fuel usage. Great mileage on calm days or tail winds of course. Very happy with my 2015 Sierra 1 ton Denali. We enjoy 5 months a year in our rig in Texas and then the mountains in September each year. A dream come true.

My truck is an 2009 Ram 2500 4x4 on 17" wheels pulling a Rockwood 8289, similar to a Flagstaff. I use a Superglide hitch. My trailer sits nose-high with only about 5.5" clearance between trailer and truck sidewalls, so I'm unable to adjust the hitch height. I'm considering a 2016 Ram 2500 4x4. Smallest wheels available are 18". That truck sits more than 2" higher than my current one unless the Ram factory air suspension option is selected, lowering about an inch. I'll certainly need to raise the trailer at least 2", possibly 3". A 3500 series truck might be even worse. Lift kits are available from Dexer--not horribly expensive.
You folks who aren't having this problem have either older, lower trucks or taller trailers than some of the "half-ton-towables". I haven't measured any new Fords, but new GM 2500s are very similar in height to Rams; about 59" at the top-rear corner of the box.

Unless your planning to pull in snow and mud I don't see the point in a 4X4, especially with a diesel. all diesel engines are taller than a gasser and mfg's have to accommodate for the front banjo housing making the truck sit higher. all my diesels have been ordered 2 wheel drive, never had a height problem.

I have a 2012 Ram 3500 CC Limited 4X4 Cummins and I'm pulling a Flagstaff 8528 BHSS and never had any issues. This truck pulls the camper like it's not even there. Go with the 3500 then you have room to upgrade you 5er in a couple of years if you choose. The only thing that I don't like is the Firestone Transforce HT tires. These are by far the worst tire I have ever had on a truck. Wet roads they spin very easy and in snow forget it unless your in 4 wheel even then they suck. I only have 23000 miles on the truck and these tires wont last another 5000 miles and I will have to replace.

have a 09 gmc sierra lbz 4x4 long bed crew cab diesel- 15 flagstaff 28' 5er reese revolution hitch( but locked straight) on the 5er.20k reese hitch no height issues - tows lovely through the adirondack mts of upstate ny-green mts of vt and nh

Thanks guys. Lot's of good info on this forum. I want to have the 4x4 as the truck will be our only vehicle. Like I said I'll do lots of measureing as part of the research before I pull the trigger.

I have a 2015 Chevy 3500HD Crew Cab, Dually, 4X4, diesel. I am currently towing (2016 Coachmen Brookstone) with the trailer front a bit high, to give me the clearance I need. Reese hitch is adjusted to top holes to give me that clearance. Looking for spring shackle to lower the rear a couple of inches. Bought off lot, and in Georgia haven't seen a 2500 or 3500 diesel on the lot with 2 wheel drive... and don't know if it is any lower.

I am towing my 8528rlws with a one ton ford diesel it does just fine. The one surprise I did get was the fuel mileage. I was hauling a 4500 lbs truck camper and was getting around 15 miles to the gallon. With the trailer I am only getting 12 to 13 did not expect that. Must drag a lot more air then the truck camper.

I just bought a 8528RKWS and am looking for a truck to pull it. Have read previous posts on 4x4 argument and would prefer to find a 4x2 truck but none available this time of year in north central PA. In fact a lot of 3/4 ton trucks I've found on dealer sites also have snow plow package installed, an expensive option I don't need since I'm only going to get the truck to tow with. Any height problems found with either Ford or RAM 3/4 ton with this trailer?

If you want 4x2 need to shop southern states my suggestion would be take a quick Texas or Oklahoma vacation and get you a year end deal for Christmas I got my Sierra GMC for under 36 k loaded Slt the deals are down here just shop around
