Bad odor in bathroom - 29rsws 2019
I have a bad odor from the black water holding tank coming into my bathroom. Commode is clean. No water in floor. No odor outside or in any outside access doors. It seems to be coming from around the base of the commode but it is not loose. Any suggestions before I pull the commode.
Thanks

Check your air admittance valve under sink if bad before pulling commode off. See thread below....

First thing, check that there is water in the sink and shower/tub traps. Always use the drain stoppers for the sink and shower/tub drains, it will slow the evaporation of the water in the traps when you are not using the RV. Do you leave water in the toilet bowl at all times? Leave the toilet lid closed when not using the RV for extended periods, this will slow the evaporation of water from the bowl. If these are all good then follow fonzie's suggestions.

If it smells sort of like poop, check what was suggested above. If it smells like urine, possibly you have a Dometic 300 toilet that you need to replace.

Hi H-Allen...for what its worth, I went through a similar scenario and I recall seeing on here a product to use called "Happy Camper". Its a powder and ever since using this product (they honestly tell you on the package to only use one scoop and no more!), along with the usual dissolvable packet I drop into the black tank, I have had no further issues in this regard. This stuff really works! Check into it and let us know if you get it and if it works for you too!

When I smelled urine odor in the bathroom I first cleaned around the toilet then told my two boys to turn the light on before using the toilet at night.
Many RV toilets are too shallow and can cause more splash than a residential toilet. Over time all those little droplets build up and can cause a "public restroom smell". Better aim and frequent cleanings really help.

Had the urine smell problem last year.
After severe cleaning operations and many attemps to correct the situation, I decided to remove the toilet base.
I found the culprit: a cracked floor flange.
Replaced ( beware, some are screw-type).
Problem solved.

One cause I've heard of is if you have full hookups and you leave your gray tank open as some do, is that sewer gas from the dump tank can make it's way back up through your sink/shower/kitchen sink (whatever is connected to your gray tanks).
One solution to this is to let your sewer hose hit the ground between the connection and the hose support many use to create a downward U to act as a trap and which will hold water and prevent gases from backing into the trailer. Also stops those nasty sewer nats from finding their way into your camper.
Myself, I just leave both tank valves shut until I feel it's time to dump and eliminate the chance of that happening.

Do you have a Dometic 300 toilet? If so, check out the thread that was bumped up this morning about the Dometic 300. Sorry, but I don’t know how to post a link to it using the mobile app that I am on now

If you use your bathroom exhaust fan, open up a window. The exhaust fan will pull sewer gas from the black tank through the roof vent.

How does this happen unless the toilet's being flushed? Then there should be water flowing that would keep gases from flowing in any quantity.

Titan Mike, it would only happen when the toilet is flushed, if you have water in the toilet bowl. However, there isn't enough water going down to completely block out the possibility of air being sucked up. Especially if you have a Maxxfan or Fan-Tastic type fan. You won't have any trouble with the little standard exhaust fan.

The kitchen sink, the bathroom sink and shower are equipped with S or P trap that retain a certain amount of water to block the backdraft of stinkky odours. Often the shower is the one that is evaporating faster allowing the bad smell. A glass of water should do the job.

I would like to thank everyone for your help. I have tried everything but am unable to stop the smell. I haven't taken the toilet up yet but I believe it is coming from inside the housing where the 2 parts are joined. I do have the Dometic 300. I am going to call Dometic Mon. I bought the camper new in Oct. 2018 so it is still under warranty. Some people have said that they sent them a new one. I hope they still will do that. I will probably upgrade to the 310 model. It's nice to have people like you that want to help everybody. Thanks!

If the odor is under the sink I would sure suspect the AAV rather than the toilet. And, yes, I know you checked it. Maybe get one that fits and give it some time for the odor to dissipate. Just a suggestion. In any case an upgrade to a 310 is a good choice.

Many folks here have described exactly what you have and upon toilet removal, found the culprit.
Reports of Dometic helping have been mostly favorable. Best of luck.
