Cold weather

I may be transferred up to Nebraska for work and I am wondering if my 5er can stand or if I can stand a winter up there in it. I know some guys do but I'm not sure what kind of trailer they have. Any ideas, experience

Good luck with that, since your trailer is an ultralite and is less capable in cold weather.
Without extensive mods, you'll be burning a lot of propane or electricity.

Depends on your setup. We use a space heater when hooked up, furnace is rarely used. It is set just as an all else fails. We've never been cold and we stayed in some cold places up north. And in the mountains. Our issue was always making sure the line outside did not freeze. But a heater hose solved that.

Invest in some good quality reflective tarps such as the Space Brand tarps Space All-Weather Blanket - REI.com

Use with the silver side facing in. Hang them over windows, across the door or doors, and on the walls around your bed. Might look like a meth lab inside, but it is amazing how much they help with retaining the heat in your RV

The OP is talking Nebraska....can be quite different from PA and WV as some of the posters are from. You won't get by in Nebraska with just a space heater. There are days where you may but many days you won't...been through NE in Jan more than once and many a time you would not want to be de-winterized.

I seemed to survive down to well bellow zero (Canada) with just a space heater (did use a second small cube in the rear for a bit extra) . Main heater is a large ceramic heater.

Just because I am from PA does not mean I have never been somewhere cold... But that's fine.. OP good luck, I'm out..

Thanks for all the input. No matter where your from, cold is cold in my book. I've had friends from Michigan visit us in Arkansas over the winter and they say it's worse here because of the humidity that usually goes along with the cold.

Not sure what I'm going to do yet, would the heater keep up if propane wasn't an issue? I was thinking maybe some hay bales or straw to close off the bottom and a good heated water hose? Worth a shot?

Do you plan on staying in a campround? Are there water and sewer hookups available and not subject to freezing? Is your underbelly enclosed and do you have tank heaters? Keeping your trailer inside warm would be possible but you will likely have a lot condensation issues and frost build-up on the windows and other poorly insulated areas. Your furnace will go through a lot of propane trying to keep up so using a supplemental electric heater would be a good idea. Hay bales would help, I still see people do that around old farm houses. I would just give some fore thought as to what you would do if it didn't work out.

Heated tanks, covered belly. Seems to be insulated well according to the specs....

You will not survive in that rig. Sorry they just aren't made for below zero temps and you will have those from time to time. I've lived in MN all my life in a well insulated house and it still gets cold. You have minimal insulation with 1 1/2" thick walls. single pane windows, nothing around the perimeter below the floor. My house has 4" thick walls, argon filled double glazed windows a full heated and insulated basement, 18" of insulation in the attic.on and on. Where are you going to find a place to park it with water and sewer that will work in the Winter? You can keep anything warm if you throw enough propane at it. But what you really need is an apartment for the Winter or at least a mobile home..

The refletix(Mylar coated bubble wrap) sold for water heater insulation, is great over the windows and under the mattress. It's surprising how much difference it makes.

What works for one person, doesn't always work for someone else. Be ready with a back up plan in case it doesn't work out for you.

I've used my TT for work in cold weather, i didnt water up, used the CG for showers etc, 1-2 electric heaters , minimal cooking, the frig coolant will freeze up about 0 degrees and wont work until about 30. so,good luck with cold weather camping and he new job!!

Living here in Northern Alberta and working out of an RV in the winter can be a challenge. But I did it in my 30WFKSS. Both photos were taken at -45 degrees Celsius in Grande Prairie. I am originally from the Yukon so I know who to keep warm. You do need to use your head be be prepared to fork out a little cash to get set up properly.

If you get Trailer Life magazine, there was an interesting article recently about a winter camping session in a small travel trailer....anything is possible...
