In my basement I have a valve on the main line before it goes to distribution.
Though I never bother turning mine off.

Mine is in the garage next to the water heater, I also have a water main shut off tool next to the garage door to shut the water off at the meter.

What is a "water main shut off tool"? We're hoping to leave longer than a regular vacation for us and I'd like to try and button up the house a bit more than we usually do.

Wow, I guess we are in the minority, but we boondock a lot, so we get used to just filling our tank then shutting the water off. We NEVER turn on the hot water heater unless we need it. So 30 minutes before a shower or doing the dishes, we turn the water heater on. And we turn the water pump on and off as we need to as well. I can't stand walking through a campground and seeing all of the water taps dripping and leaking all over and making mud puddles everywhere, so we just use our water source to fill our tank, then turn it off. We had a motorhome in the past that leaked whenever there was constant pressure on the water lines, but as long as you used the on-board pump on an as-needed basis, it was cool - so I guess we just learned to be conservative with how we use the water.
We also shut off the main water to our house whenever we're going to be gone for more than a few days. It only takes coming home to a flooded basement once to learn that one.

When we leave for a trip of more than 3 days, I turn the water off to the water heater and unplug the power cord(electric), turn the water off to the washer, and unplug the power cord, unplug the dryer cord, turn off power strip for entertainment center(tv, sat, stereo) open hot water faucet in kitchen, turn off water at each toilet. I know, turning the valve off at the meter would be the easiest thing to do but I live in the woods and I don't want all my water shut off in case of a woods fire and the neighbors may need my water. I am not able to take trips of more than a week, yet. I might be more inclined to turn the main line off if I were to go on longer trips.

As a seasonal camper I turn the water off ever time we leave for the week. It's the best insurance plan I know off. I also turn off the hot water tank (LP) between uses but I leave the electric on. Yes for morning showers we use both systems to speed in the recovery.
I also turn off the water at home when I go on vacation. I have a grandfather who went to FLA for a month only to return home and discover the toilet line blew. That little line flooded two floors of the house.

Being as lazy as I am, I turn it off when we leave as it is much less effort than cleaning up the mess and fixing it should something happen while we're gone. Just conserving what little energy I have left.

You should have a shut off valve either where your water comes into the house or inside where the water comes in the house. We have a well/pump so we just turn of the breaker.

Nope, never did on my boats and don't turn it off on the camper.
