We made one for our aging pup out of a piece of plywood about 8" wide.
It was wide enough for the dog but also for us to still use the steps.
I glued indoor/outdoor carpet on for traction.
It was long enough to fit against the front of the top step and went to the ground. I made it so it had a metal bracket that 'clipped' to the second and first step. You kind of slid it down on from the top and it locked onto the step.
Sorry I don't have any pictures and gave it away after we had to put the dog down a couple years ago. It also worked well for her to get in the back seat of the TV.
