I drain my water heater on my Windjammer, if its going to sit a while. I didn't last year for 6weeks and it got real funky and put a smell in the whole trailer. Its not a big deal and it only takes a minute.

I drain mine at the campsite on the last day of my trip, before I leave to go back home. No reason to carry that extra water with me. And the way I have to park my trailer, I cannot level up to drain at home.

Drain my hot water tank for winterizing only.....after camping for 15 years, and never having a problem with the HWT, I don't see the need to drain it except for winterizing. We don't drink hot water anyhow, and never had a odor problem either. There is enough to do setting up and tearing down when camping.....no need to add another project that isn't necessary!

They have anodes with the pet cock drain incorporated into it and this makes it very easy to drain.

I would definitely be interested in that, Anode with petcock. Got any brand names/models?
Thank you.

There's several available for Atwood style (aluminum tank) water heaters.
Which, when you think about it is questionable since Atwood doesn't even put one in from factory.
But... here are two for that type... ONE... TWO
I have not been able to find one for a Suburban - Mor Flo style (steel tank) water heater.

You will most likely get answers on all ends of the spectrum and they are most likely all right. How long you can leave water in the WH depends on the water supply. If you have only ever used very clean sterile water, might not have an issue, however if you use well water ( many remote campsites) you could have an issue in a little as a few weeks of warm weather. How often you drain depends on the water you use.

Ernest, in the water heater tank? No need if you have hot and cold shut off valve. Close valves and drain. For that matter no tanks really get AF in them just drain them all well.

Do not put antifreeze in Freshwater tank or water heater. You should only put antifreeze in in the hot and cold water lines ( via winterizing valve on water pump) and in all plumbing traps. Drain the Fresh water tank, and the water heater, and black and grey tanks.
Check this out:

If your unit has a storage compartment below the WH door,,,
Be sure it is closed tightly,,, or you could end up with wet compartment !!!
I drain ours almost every time,,, unless we are going back out in a couple of weeks !!!

Since we tend to go out after the weather gets cold, I basically winterize after each trip. I tested draining the water heater on the trip back yesterday, and it was completely empty using the low point drain and venting through one of the hot water faucets.
