Factory tires?

Just read OldCoot's message in the Modifications and Updates forum. He had a factory tire blow out, causing $1800 damage. Not pretty! Perhaps a one off and not sure if the tire was defective from the get go, but anyone else had early problems with the factory installs?

My coworker had a blowout 1.5 hrs from where he bought the trailer at RVWholesalers. No spare. Was not a happy customer at that point.

The tire was 2 yrs old and had probably 8-10,000 miles on it. Had checked tire pressure about 100 miles prior to blowout or failure. Sure wish I would of had the TPMS I have now. I might have caught it before all the damage. Tires were also balanced. Didn't run over anything either. Traveling south on Hwy 65 just north of Springfield, MO. Bought the 4 GY Marathons in Springfield.

The tires they put on these units should be an EMBARRESMENT. I would rather pay and extra $400.00 or so when you buy the unit. I had a blow out at about 9000 miles lucky no damage, looked the same as the trier the OLDCOOT had mounted on the carrier. Seems they all come apart that way. Like I said I had no damage but I do not know anyone on this forum that wouldn't pay extra for a quality trier. I just think it's time for FR to understand this. A very common complaint...

I had 3 blowouts with the factory tires (3 year old Carlisles, maybe 2000 miles on them) on the way back from a Myrtle Beach trip. Replaced with Goodyear Marathons and they lasted 6 years with no problems. I haven't had any problems on the new TT (knock on wood).

I think when you have multiple failures in quick succession, you can point to bad tires. If you have one, you cannot rule out a road hazard. If the pressure gets low, they can heat up and blow out.

I took delivery of our 8289WS March 15th. Pulled it to the house and put it in the Ag Building while I install some mods.

The Goodyear Marathons should be in new week, and that's the next place the RV is going. Load Range "D".

Discount Tire tried to convince me to buy a brand that they carry (and probably have a higher profit margin on), but I insisted on Marathons.

I also told them that if the build date on the tires was older than 6 months, I would not take the tires.

I would call before going to verify the date of mfg before dragging the trailer to them. Just saying.

Wow, lots of interest here, and rightly so. Looks like the situation has improved, but still room for improvement. Would be nice to have the option for upgrades when ordering. Tires were never discussed with the sales guy. So, aluminum rims and a nitrogen fill with a low premium tire - that sounds like a great combination! I'll pay attention to the tire make and the tire pressures on our first trips this summer.

My new 5er came with Akuret tires on it. I have never heard of them and I used to work for GM's Tire and wheel division and I have heards of most of them but not that one. I am hoping that I do not have a blowout then maybe next year I will be able to afford new ones.

I intend to do that. When they call to tell me the tires are in, and to set up an appointment, I'll have them check the dates.
