Flickering/Strobing Lights and Overcharged Battery

All my trailer lights have a strobe effect when the unit is plugged into AC power source, but not when using only battery power. Everything works fine while only using DC power. Also, my battery almost overcharged (cells nearly dried) and the positive battery cable started to melt, I suspect while plugged into AC power at a developed campground on the way home recently. I suspect the two are related. Sound like a faulty converter? No fuses blown anywhere. Any way to test?
