Water filter bypass

I have read a lot of threads on this forum in regard to a lot water filter housing problems. The water filter housing has KW1 on a label. I have a 2015 Flagstaff V-lite. The filter is located in the rear bedroom under a cabinet. If it leaked I would have water all over the bedroom. Is this still a problem with the housing? Is this something I should worry about and take out the filter and housing, splicing in a small pvc? In its place putting in an outside filter. I don't like the water stuff being inside the living quarters. If someone has done this, could you post some pictures. My previous RV had the filter located in an outside cabinet, if it leaked, the water would just go to the ground with no inside problems. I also thought about drilling a hole to the bottom outside, placing some type of pan to catch water, so if I had a leak, the water would just leak to the ground. But water pressure would just let it spray all over. Has anyone done a mod like this?

Some here have used something like this.

1/2" Schedule 80 CPVC Coupling 9830-005

Remove filter head and thread the two Pex lines together.

Use some pipe thread tape.

Others have used Shark bite fittings and some PEX to hook it all up.

Many of us use the inline filters from Walmart's RV section.

others are using whole house filters from Home Depot or Lowes.

Your thought is a good one! Yank that sucker outta there and replace with a piece of pex tubing. With where yours is, if it leaks you won't know it till there is water everywhere..not worth the risk. Although we don't have your trailer, our Rockwood had that same filter. After reading all the horror stories in here, probably same ones you read, I removed ours before our very first trip. We now use an outside filter and that works great..and if it springs a leak I don't care since it's outside.
If you replace yours with a piece of pex tubing and its too tight or difficult to use pex clamps, then just get yourself some Sharkbites from Home Depot or Lowes, quick and simple and they work great.

Today, I looked at my water filter. There seems to be plenty of play in the water lines going to filter. So that 1/2" schedule 80 coupling should work. I will go to Ace Hardware and get one. I have one of those outside blue filters from Walmart.

If you have the same setup as mine, you might want to pick up a small hose clamp as it will make the job easier. You can either cut the hose or cut the old crimp clamp on the soft tubing that connects to the screw on fitting for one side of the filter. Then remove the filter from the wall and turn it to get the hose on the other side off. Then put the bypass coupler in and use the hose clamp to hold the soft hose to the screw on fitting.

Notice the small drops of water on the filter in the first picture? There was more on the floor. There was a slow leak from my filter when I got home from my PDI. As soon as I saw that, I removed the filter assembly as others have done for the reasons you gave. Don’t want a flooded trailer…

I bought a 1/2" coupler to bypass the water filter. Those hoses that go to the top of the filter case, do the they just screw out or do I need to cut the hose, replace with another type fitting and use hose clamps. Mine looks similar to the getisme posting.

Yes, they just unscrew but the one side has PEX Tubing so I wouldn't unscrew it or the fitting will rotate in the PEX hose crimp and possibly cause a leak. That's why I cut the crimp on the soft tubing and unscrewed that fitting and then turned the filter top to get the PEX side fitting unscrewed. Then put it all back together with the 1/2" coupler and used a hose clamp on the soft tubing.

I removed the filter housing assembly entirely and use a whole house filter as many others do. I cut the webbed looking hose close to the filter canister with a knife to leave a clean I.D. to the tube. I cut the crimp clamp off at the T with a dremel and cut off disc. Once the pex tube was carefully slit at the T with an xacto knife, so as to not damage the barbed end . Add a new 1/2" crimp clamp, insert the clean cut end of the existing white web hose over the barb and crimp it into place. Leak check your work and you are done with it. It took all of 10 min. to complete The photo is of the whole house filter setup I carry. It is in a large collapsable file folder box with a large stainless hose clamp that the filter housing sets in and holds all my hoses, etc.

The only thing that I would add, is that , after removing the inside water filter from our Rockwood 8315BSS, I purchased a normal-sized traffic cone at Home Depot and cut the top off it at the appropriate height - it has now become the "holder" for the outside water filter when camping. Sorry no photo.
