Adding air bags

We will be adding air bags to our 2010 F150. My question is do you add air to the bags before you load up the Tavel trailer hitch spring bars or afterwords?

I add after hitching up. Not to level up but to stiffen up!!

It's still a daily driver and I like flexibility of airing up and down.

Adding air will level you witch is what you want to do and it will also firm up the ride.

I added before I hooked up our fifth wheel - not sure it really matters if you do it before or after hooking up. For me, it was easier to do before hooking up.

I would think after you connect the spring bars. It will probably take some playing to find the right pressure. I have a wireless remote compressor, and it is great for adjusting on the fly. If you can get the wireless compressor, you will love it.

This is a very interesting video on air bags with the use of a weight distribution system. This video only apply to tow behind trailers not 5 TH wheels trailers

Hope This Helps Tim

It is a good video and does a great job of explaining what a good weight distribution system actually does...which is distribute the weight of a trailer load evenly between all the axles. But it doesn't go that extra step and showing if using the air bags to help with the ride comfort. For example, with my setup (F-250 with a 5th wheel), I use the air bags to level up, but I also use them to help smooth the ride on really rough roads, like the concrete highway system in the Houston area (and other places). I can increase the PSI in the airbags, and it helps greatly with the bounce and jounce the roads cause. Then when I get on smoother roads again, I can let the air out to get just the leveled truck/trailer. So in this case, with a TT, would the air bags help there? Just curious more than anything, as I don't remember having too much of an issue when I pulled a TT.

I have a Rockwood 2607a and tow with a 12’ Ram 1500 CCab. I invested in a Reese straight-line 1200# dual cam/trunnion bar WDH. It’s a great setup. I put a set of airbags on the truck before we bought the trailer thinking I would need them. Turns out they really weren’t needed but found that once the trailer and truck were properly setup the airbags, with low pressure really helped with cornering stability in the hills. My truck is very comfortable with the setup and the truck ties true whether it’s blowing hard on the prairie or towing through the Rockies. I add air to the system not to level anything but to aid in stability. Invest in a quality WDH. I see trailers blowing all over the place while mine tracks straight!
