Battery for Rockwood

Well i guess someone needed my battery for my camper more than i did since i went out sunday morning and noticed it was stolen while in my drive way at home. So my question is just what kind of battery do i get to replace it as we very seldom ever camp without electric. I dont think i ever look to see what kind it had before so i dont know what to get to replace it

I had to replace my battery last year, but no for the same reason you have. I bought mine from Wal-Mart, deep cycle marine battery. They had two different sizes when I bought mine. I made the mistake and got the big one well it wouldn't fit in the battery box, so I toke it back and got the next size down. Just so you don"t do as a did if you can take your battery box with you it just might save you an extra trip. I don't remember the price of the battery......SORRY!

I did that one time too. The next time I took the old one in. They want them for recycling anyway.

You need a GROUP 24 INTERSTATE battery, 550 CCA DEEP CYCLE. That should be what it had in there, but just be sure it is a marine or deep cycle battery. Randy

I can't speak to the physical size of the battery you need (group 24 vs. group 27) however I feel comfortable recommending an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery. This type of battery has a number of advantages over traditional flooded lead acid batteries including low self discharge, impossible to spill, no need to top up water levels, and extremely resistant to cold. The downside is price. Assuming however, that your thief doesn't return to help himself again, an AGM battery should continue working for the next 4 to 6 years. I've attached the specs for the group 24 version of the battery I use. Of note is number of cycles you can expect from the battery, even at a 80% depth of discharge.

I went to Costco and got 2 6 volt golf cart batteries. People aren't kidding when they say to get 2 6 volt batteries and you will have a longer power cycle. Also, i mounted my batteries inside my storage area so they don't get ripped off. i just used a plastic bin underneath them in case it leaks. I have been running this for over a year now. If i did dry camp more i would get some more with a solar panel.

Having lead/acid storage batteries in an unvented area is not
a great idea.
Batteries give off hydrogen gas. Remember the Hindenburg.

Look at the amp hour rating, NOT the CCA (cold cranking amps) This is a huge mistake when sizing RV house batteries. You are not starting anything with this battery so CCA means nothing. What you want is the battery with the highest amp hours that will fit the space. Thus much the reason why so many people change over to twin 6V batteries rather than GR24 or 27 batteries because the amp hour ratings are much higher. If it is just a single battery then a group27 "deep cycle" (they aren't really) battery is what is commonly used.

I am replacing my single 12 volt battery and installing two 6-volt Interstate U2200 deep cycle batteries (wiring in series) tomorrow. I am also considering a lock to keep them from walking away. The battery used is a group 24 size. It comes a number of ways depending on the make. 500amp 600amp or 650amp . If you have a choice get the larger it will last longer dry camping. Remember this battery also supplies power to the break-away brakes. By law you must have one.
