Battery installation

We have a 2109S and fixing to pull the plug on a 6 volt duel battery system.

Thoughts

If you do, change your converter from WFCO to a progressive dynamics or other unit. It will save your batteries from being cooked from under voltage charging.

It doesn’t require it, but from my experience with the WFCO unit, you would want to. WFCO units have a bad habit of not kicking into bulk charge mode or 14.4 v. So it ends up cooking the batteries over time and taking twice as long to charge

I went thru 2 sets of group 24 batteries in 3 years before I figured it out. It would take 6 hours to charge from 50%. Then I upgraded to the PD replacement and my charge time dropped to about 2-3 hours. That’s also when I switched to 2 6v batteries.

So either spend the money on upgrading the converter or spend it on batteries more frequently.

Yup, the WFCO is marginal even with s single 75 AH group 24 battery. Go for the converter upgrade. It will pay for itself in the long run.

My first mod to my TT in 2005 and my current Rockwood was to remove the factory battery and replace it with two 6-volt batteries. I use Interstate Extreme Cycle golf cart batteries.

Never had a problem with the factory converter.

My new WFCO would not kick the charge up to 14.4 volts. I changed out my new battery to a battery that I knew had low voltage. The charger went from 3.2 volts to 13.6 volts. I put in a new Progressive Dynamics converter and when I plugged it in, it went straight to 14.4 and stayed there for a couple of hours before dropping to 13.6.
I installed a Progressive converter in my last RV and loved it.
Even though you have a Progressive converter, they recommend that you check your battery electrolyte levels pn a regular basis.

In addition to a converter, either move the new converter as close to the batteries as possible or change out the wire to a MUCH larger gauge so that the voltage drop is lower. No sense in putting in a converter that gets up to 14.4V if the voltage drop causes the voltage at the battery to be down in the 13s.

Looks like our WFCO converter best is at 12.7 volt. Progressive dynamic what size should I buy.

This is on our battery. Should have had 14.4 from what I guess. Is that correct?

so if I install two 6 volt battery's to replace my single 12 volt I will have to replace the converter?? that sounds crazy to me. my converter is hard wired into the electrical panel and would be an all day replacement.

Depends on it's state of charge. If it's fully charged, that would be your float voltage which would be fine.

If you decide to replace it, the one you should buy depends on the panel you have now.

I had a 8955PEC and I replaced it with a PD4560. I had to trim a little on one side but it fit right in the place of the WFCO. Of course I was upgrading the RV to 50 amp service at the time.

You can also just replace the converter section in those units. Give Randy @ BestConverter.com a call and he'll tell you exactly what you need.

You don't have to. You can keep your present converter but it won't work as well as a Progressive dynamics converter.

Out of curiosity, how far is your present converter from the batteries?

why even change to two 6v batteries ? a simple 12v like you have is plenty.

Battery installation

13.58 volt is off the converter. Off the battery. Battery 12 volt is 12.40.

Battery installation

You mean 12.6? 12.4 is 80 percent

We are not saying that you need to do anything. All that we are saying is that we have done this battery change before you and and the results we went to were that we upgraded to a different converter.

Not if you dry camp or boondock.

Markval, it won’t be necessary to replace your converter at all to run 2 6volt golf cart batteries. The converter will just “see” the 2 6volts as a big 12 volt battery. I even run 3 12volt Group 31 batteries in parallel with the stock WFCO converter. It just takes longer to bring up a bigger “battery”. What the people here are saying is the that the progressive dynamics converter is a superior product. I have never owned one, but I believe they are correct. One of the main advantages of the PD converter is that you can tell it to go to the 14.4 charge mode, something that can’t be done with the WFCO. That will bring the batteries to a full charge faster. The WFCO will do 14.4 also but I was only able to get it there one time when my batteries were WAY down. What I get is 13.6 for 40, maybe 48 hours then a drop down to a 13.2 float voltage. Jay.
