Castle Rock Tires

I was getting my 2016 rockwood travel trailer ready for the first camping trip of the season. I went to check the air in the spare and couldn't get the plastic tire cover off. I finally beat it off with a piece of wood and found that the tread had separated from about a foot and a half of tire. It had two large splits running down each side of the tire. The tire is three years old and has never been on the ground. I sure am glad I had replaced the other four tires with Goodyear Endurance after one of those Castle Rocks had also started to have the tread separate. Castle rock tires are junk.

My Castle Rock Load Range C tires on my previous camper dry rotted in less than 2 years (including the unused spare). They had cracks between the treads that could only be seen when the tire was deflated and removed.

I replaced them with Marathon load range D and never looked back.

We bought a 2017 3006WK, it was brand new in December of 2018. It had been in a showroom for a while.

We went on 1 trip after Christmas, and just went on our second trip last weekend. So the trailer has less then 2000 miles on the tires ( Castle Rocks ). We blew one tire about 80 miles from the house, and then the second tire blew about 160 miles from the house. Thankfully we caught both before any damage was caused to the trailer. I decided we couldn’t trust those china bombs so we spent the second day of our trip getting Goodyear Endurance load range E mounted. I feel much better now with nothing but good reviews I’ve heard about the Endurance tires.

The Castle Rocks need to be recalled! Nothing but garbage!!

I just returned from a 1400 mile trip on my Castle Rocks.

4500+ total miles since taking delivery of the camper.

I thoroughly inspect them before and after each trip (as you should do with any trailer tire).

Do you realize how many countless thousands are out there giving no trouble?

Oh trust me, I made sure we had 65 psi in each tire and they all looked great. Mind you this was our second trip with this trailer. We have have 3 other trailers before this one and never had issues like this.

Got 7 years out of my Castle Rock tires on our old trailer. Around 10,000 miles on them.

I'm not defending the tires.

The 2nd failure was predictable because of the stresses of the excessive loading caused by the 1st failure.

Check your brake controller setting. If you have not changed it since your previous camper, it may be too heavy for the new one. The brand new brake linings and drums may be overheating the tires and brake assemblies.

We bought our Surveyor in Wilmington, NC. Towed it home to Virginia Beach, then to Maine via PA, NY, MA, NH, and ME. Then returned home same path. A couple of local trips, then to FL Keys in January. On way back north in Clermont, I woke up leaning to one side.
Always checked air pressure, appearance of tires at start of day; and a Laser thermal check at every stop.
We “got lucky” and picked up what looked like a piece of Mig welding wire, about 0.030” diameter and 3/8” long in the driver’s side rear tire. Penetrated in one of the grooves between the thick sections of the tread.

Decided to replace all 4 with GY Endurance. Went from 205-14 D to 215-14 D.

You can... but with the now many reports of tires failing as spares, new, having never touched the ground, (along with the myriad of other failure reports) I believe it applies pretty well here.

Those Goodyear Marathon's have just as bad (if not worse) of a track record than the Castle Rock's and the TowMax (aka - BlowMax) tires.

That's why Goodyear replaced them with the new Endurance ST tires.

Keep a good eye on them.

We put 12K miles on our previous camper and 7K miles on our current one - so far - both with Castle Rock tires and no problems.
With the previous camper we got subfreezing temps. and 105F and the tires where fine when we sold the camper.

I NEVER inflate them to 65psi when cold.

I always inflate to 60 PSI and almost always see pressure going above 65psi (sometimes above 70) on my TPMS as the tire temperature increases when on the road.

It is my believe that overpressure (due to temperature) and high speed (I tow at 65mph) is the cause of most blow outs.
Goodyear, etc - good brands - probably have a better margin for that but not the price oriented China products.

MAX sidewall pressures (or any other recommended pressures) are done so (engineered) with the increase in pressure due to driving, taken into consideration.

You should not lower the cold PSI to compensate for this.
By doing so you are running the tires UNDER inflated.

But since they have a larger failure rate than other non chinese tires, why take the risk? The problem is when they go, they cause a lot of damage. Not worth it. Mine got taken off as soon as I bought my trailer. Have had too many bad experiences with chinese tires.

I am one to believe the VAST majority of tire failures are from one of two things

1) road damage which would damage any tire (nail, screw, other debris, pot hole damage, etc)

2) under-inflation (user error)

How many thousands of these tires are on the road trouble free?

Only complainers complain. Happy customers rarely report.

Your $$. Do what you want.

Jayco realized it was costing so much they wont put them on their trailers anymore...they switched to Goodyear Endurance and did so because the Castle pops were causing too many problems according to the dealer near me.

Outdoor RV Products and Lance did the same thing with their trailers.
