Check your roof

We have a Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite 8329ss with the diamond package. My son got on the roof today to help me put the cover on and discovered that the calking between the nose cover and the rubber roof is cracked to where water can get in.

I noticed some water on the floor the last time we camped but the windows were fogged up. I thought it was moisture from my c-pap machine. Now it looks like water has leaked in.

Will be calling the dealer tomorrow. Need them to send a mobile repair unit to come down to make the repairs.

We have only had the unit six months.

So check your roof.

Our 2008 Surveyor had the same problem. In June there were no leaks. When I brought it home in August to get ready for a trip I found water leaked in from the exhaust fan in the bathroom. I got on the roof and found all the caulking cracked on the entire roof and on all the vents. The caps on the vent pipes were so brittle they fell apart when I touched them. I washed the roof every year but never thought about checking the caulking etc. I learned a good lesson. I re-did the dicor and replaced the vent caps and one sky light cover. All is good now and i will check on the caulking etc each year now.

Roof manufacturer says check it twice a year to keep warranty in force. Since I don't do roofs, I have my dealer (where the trailer is stored) to do it for me.

The dealer is sending me a tube of calking. Would be a $250 Charge for them to come 45 miles to put the calking on. Had to take pictures for them to cover the calking.

I could take to them for repairs but not till the end of Nov. I will do it myself.

Thanks to this thread, I checked my roof today and found a one inch spot on the front cap seam that was suspect and should probably be re-caulked.

Had the same thing happen with our 8280WS, had it for 9 months and only used it twice on short trips of 20 miles. Ours was leaking at the rear seam where the roof and back wall meet. It's now been 3+ years and we've had no further problems, knock on wood.

I would have been claiming warranty on a six month old unit.

Same thing on my new 2014 Palomino Columbus 5er we have had it 3 months. I caulked it using Geocel Advanced RV EPDM roof sealant. I didn't want to take it back to the stealers for repairs they aren't good at to start with.

I had my mini light in, for a separate warranty claim, and asked tech to check out the roof. He said he would take a look, but if it needed anything, it was not covered under warranty. I bought it new 7 weeks ago.... luckily, there are no problems with the roof, but that policy really stinks.

This dealer has been wonderful so far, and I didn't even buy from them. The only way they'll make money off of me at this point, would be through warranty work.... so he's prob telling the truth.

I shopped on the internet and found a great deal. My dealer then helped me find a FR dealer in my area that could help with warranty work. So far, so good. The local dealers handling Rockwood are corporate stores, so I'm pretty happy with the current arrangement. I'd much rather deal with smaller family run establishments.

Less than 2 years old. It is at the dealer and I will have to see if warranty will fix it. The 2nd year warranty runs out 12/3/14. First response from FR was it is "normal". I am not buying that. We had a Class C with the same type roof for 5 years and never saw this.

We have the 8289WS Diamond Package and just got ours winterized. Dealer checked our roof and apparently have the same issue as everyone above. Had to do some chalking. We had to pay for the tube of chalking. Another thing we found out was that the rod in the hot water heater had to be replaced. It apparently rots if in hard water and we should plan on replacing it every year. $15 item. The awning that is over on the dining room doesn't fit snug against the wall when closed. Dealer said they are all like that and couldn't do anything. I don't know if I buy that or not. It hasn't caused any trouble just doesn't look correct.

With that being said, overall we are happy with our unit.

Thanks for the "check your roof" reminder...I got up on mine and checked over every nook and cranny...all looks tighter than a ducks butt!! :-)

That doesn't sound right....both the awning and the side attachments should fit flush when retracted.

Can you post a picture?

That is what we thought as well. I don't have a picture but if I get one I'll post it.

Caulking could be claimed but the dealer will charge for travel time/mileage to do a "warranty repair". If he took it in, they would do it no question but at their timeline. A tube of caulk - I'd do it myself just to be able to say "It's done, and done right". And it would be done NOW.

Check my roof twice a year for cracks in the chalking. Can't remember the last time i went up to check and didnt need to chalk something.
Great preventive maintenance!

I covered all the caulking on the roof of our Roo with Eternabond tape. Will do it on our next trailer, too. IMO it's worth the cost for the peace of mind.
