Disturbing Discovery

We bought our 2019 Mini-Lite 2503S last July, and towed it home (about 250 miles). According to the sticker and the dealer, it has Nitrogen filled tires (which, I believe, are not supposed to lose pressure like "air" filled tires.

We are getting ready to hit the road so I checked the tires this morning. Per the sticker on the trailer, pressure should be 65 psi. I was disturbed to find that, on all 4 tires, pressure was within 1 or 2 psi of 50 psi.

Was someone trying to save on the cost of Nitrogen?

Nitrogen-filled tires will still lose pressure eventually. Just fill them up with regular old air (which is already 78% nitrogen) from literally any compressor and be done with it.

Then do a search in the forums for "nitrogen" and you'll have days worth of reading.

My Nitrogen filled China Bombs lost 5 to 10 pounds per week. When I put my Endurance tires on, they lost 3 pounds over the winter. Hmmmmmm......

Nitrogen is more of a gimmick in my mind.

congrats on your 2503, we have it's twin, a 2015 Micro Lite 25KS, and consider it to be the ideal camper for a couple, ... I think FR has stopped production of that model, ... tire leak could be from any number of sources, of course something in the tire, but also the valve stem is possible, and is usually the last thing considered, ... keep an eye on it and you'll find the source, ... happy trailering with a great trailer, ...

It's actually 78%. When I bought tires last, the guy asked if I wanted 70% Nitrogen added to the tires. I said "Air is already 78%!!?????????"

He said "Yeah, but we're having a sale"..........

3 of my Castle Rock tires lost about 5 psi over the winter. One of them lost 55 psi over the winter. All were Nitrogen filled....well 3 of them now. Filled it up last week with "Nitrogen Lite" (only 78%) and it's still holding, so doesn't look like a slow leak.

When was the last time they were checked?

I would be happy they were all about the same. Air them up to specs and roll on.

My "china bombs" lost ZERO PSI over the winter. 4000+ miles and some cold weather along with 50+ nights on the road.

Agreed.

Who checked them, the dealer? Oh boy!

You never know what you have till you do it yourself.

Nitrogen filled tires is a gimmick used by the factory to make you believe you are getting more for your money. Unless you use your R/V for oval racing or flying it at 30,000 feet, it is useless to the average user.

I wish I had some way of testing tires on an R/V lot for Nitrogen content. I bet it isn't what the factory wants you to believe!

Get in the habit of checking trailer tire pressure every day that you pull the trailer. Every time you get out of the truck, take a quick look at the tires to make sure they are equally inflated. A tire blow out can do a tremendous amount of damage to the trailer.
As other have said, nitrogen filled tires are a gimmick.

Our 233s came with tires that state 50PSI max so maybe they just fill to 50 out of habit vs checking the sticker?

Unless something has changed the factory that puts the nitrogen in the tires in not Forest River it is the tire vendor Lionshead Tire and Wheel

I was wondering the same thing. BTW, all 4 of my tires were at 47PSI when I checked them the other week for the first time since last Fall. 3 PSI loss over the winter seemed pretty good to me.

I had Nitrogen filled Good Year Marathon Chnia Bombs on my Rockwood Fiver. I had the said tires on for 3 years and they never lost a pound! Rubber valve stems with TPMS too!

My Westlakes didn't lose anything over winter, they are 50psi now, and I assume they were upon delivery, which is the pressure called for on the trailer sticker.

What I love about my TireMinder TPMS setup is that I no longer have to crawl around on my hands and knees to check the tire pressure every morning when I'm getting ready to roll.

I look at the LCD screen and toggle through each tire and I know where my tire pressure and temps are.

And when I put the slides in to roll, I can inspect the tires easily to look for any other tire problems that may be getting ready to rear their ugly heads.

A TPMS is at the top of my Christmas list.!
