Dual 30 lb LP tanks

Hi all, I find the LP tanks a bit confusing as far as the auto changer goes. Can someone shed some light on the operation as to positioning the change over valve . Do both tank stops need to be open, also how does one remove the shroud? When I open one tank stop with the auto change over pointing to that tank, I get a red indicator, the other tank with change over position to that tank reads green. Tag says when I switch the change over, one tank becomes the reserve. Believe one may be empty if I'm on the right track. Not sure anymore.

I'd say you have an empty tank, using this valve is not always the best idea, you could end up with two tanks empty at the most awkward time, we open one then if it goes empty we manually switch over that way we know we have to get the empty filled up.

While you have one full tank and on empty tank... tap on them. And then remember what they sound like.

Handle on our switch-over valve points towards the tank 'in use'. With both tank valves off you get a red indicator. Turn on the tank 'in use' as indicated by the position of the switch & the indicator goes green if there is propane in the tank. Turn on the opposite side tank & it will auto switch if the primary tank runs empty (nice if you are running the heater in cold weather & don't want to get up in the middle of the night to switch tanks). Indicator will remain red until you manually move the switch to point at the other tank & then the indicator will go back green (unless it's empty as well). You're then good to go to refill the empty tank.

I'd definitely say you have an empty tank.

I'm in favor of leaving both tanks valves OPEN (isn't that the reason we have auto-switch regulators?). Doesn't take much to take a look at the visual indicator to see if it's red or green. It would take a long time to drain 30 lbs of propane so you have a lot of time to refill the empty one.

DDC has the right idea.....I used to leave them both open so they could automatically switch over. I never noticed when they switched over.....so one night it was 26 degrees outside, and my wife woke me up because it was 58 in the house. I was advised to leave one shut,,,,,,if the first one goes empty,,,,,you can switch over....and it won't ruin your day with it so cold out when you have to wait until the next morning to fill both. And DW can make you some nice hot breakfast that way.

Freetyme1....forgot to tell you.....that shroud pulls straight up and off. I could be tight if the bottles are too far apart on the bracket, but it'll slide right off of there.

Always keep an eye on them. 30 years of camping never ran both tanks out don't want to get up in the middle of the night to turn the second one on.

Also you may get a false reading if you have no gas being drawn and both lines have pressure like in when you are testing them.

I have actual guages with dials on each of my tanks so I know exactly where each one is at. Got them from a friend who has a local propane business. But I know you can get them at Camping World too.

Like several others, I've had both bottles empty out with the crossover valve in auto. Probably not much of a problem in the summer, but we're full time and we do use the furnace quite a bit during the winter months when the heat pump/AC can't handle the chill.....for us, the valve stays in manual

One tank on at a time, I'd rather get up in the middle of the night and turn the other one on than be cold the rest of the night.

1 tank on at a time! Instead of the (Auto Changeover Valve Green/Red Flag) I would much rather have a Alarm go off when (1) tank is used up.I don't care if it is the middle of the Night and 30 deg! Youroo!!

I would rather get up in the middle of the night and have a bottle to change over to. It’s too easy to forget to check your propane when using the auto changeover feature.

Unfortunately Murphy’s Law states: RV propane bottles only run dry between 2 AM and 3 AM.
