Extended Warranties?

What's the census in extended warranties?
Are they worth the money?
Are they really needed?

My dealer called and offered a 5-year "bumper-to-bumper" for $1500.

I am undecided....please advise.

Randy

Do a search and you'll find lots of discussion on extended warranties. General consensus is they aren't worth it. You dealer is getting a kick back on that 3rd party 5 year $1500 warranty. You could get a 2nd year warranty direct from Forest River on your Rockwood for $150. IMHO well worth the $ and peace of mind.

IMO not worth it on trailers. (Iffy on anything else).

They will almost always find a way to blame you for what was broken and not pay anything. Some even require you to return to the selling dealership and if they close, you are SOL.

The best deal is the 2nd year warranty through Forest River for $150 though it doesn't cover everything the 1st year does.

a search here or on any RV forum, will show that the overwhelming majority vote NO to extended warranties.

i could see it on a used rig, since you wouldn't get a factory warranty.

but as others have said, the 2nd year factory warranty for $150 is well worth it.
we had almost all warranty issues occur within the first two years.

i would first call your dealer back and ask why you weren't told about the FR 2nd year warranty and why they're trying to shove a 3rd party extended warranty down your throat.

second, this is discussed constantly and a quick search will get you all the info you need.

The reason the dealer doesn't mention the second year warranty from forest river is they get zero kickbacks from it.
Which is why they try to sell you one they will first.

Simple rule of thumb applies here as in autos.
If you can write a check any day of the week for a new frig, a/c, furnace, axles, water heater, converter, etc., then you most likely don't need extended warranty.

We decided to go with the 2nd year warranty option with FR. It says it must be purchased within 10 days of rv purchase date. We paid a $3k deposit on 12/2 and went in on 12/12 and wrote another check for the remainder. Our paperwork says we bought it on 12/2 so I hope FR doesn't deny the 2nd year warranty purchase. We didn't pay the remainder and pick it up until the 12th! Checks in the mail.....

My dealer was very upfront with us about the extended warranty from FR. He pointed us right to the paperwork to fill out and told us to get it in within 10 days.

And people have mentioned they mailed it in months after purchase and FR still accepted it.

I speak from experience that the extended warranties are not worth it. We bought one with our new camper 5 years ago and when we had a problem with the heater we called to have it repaired. They took out the heater and found a broken wire. They called it an adjustment. This is how they get away with not covering things. When you read the book you get you will see 3 pages of stuff they cover and 8 pages of stuff they do not. This is just like a tire warranty. They will not cover a flat tire unless you can prove it was the tire and not something in the road. I would be more inclined to trust the 2nd year manufacturers warranty.

extended warranties

Just been turned down by NAB national adjustment bureau. We have a tire and wheel warranty with NIU. Had a china maypop blowout. Reason for denial. Authorization for replacement was not provided. Hard to do on a Sunday in the middle of no where.
2nd reason. based on the info provided, there is no indication the damage to your tires were caused by a covered road hazard. This tire was shredded to pieces. Hard to fig.what caused it the blow out. Extended warranties are not in the best interest of the rver for sure. I now regret having purchased it. Serge

Waiting to hear from someone who had a frig or roof air go out and had it replaced at no cost on ext warranty. ????
when I was 20 and stupid, I was unknowingly sold an extended warranty with my first new car in 1978. Reverse went out at 3 years. New transmission installed at no charge. I could not have paid for it then. I've never bought another one until current 2013 5er. Hope I never need it but with what I see it costs to replace some of the items on the unit, I feel better about having it.
