Hot water feeds toilet?

I have a 2018 2706ws. Noticed on this last trip that the toilet had no water pressure and the the rest of the trailer had normal pressure. I was dry camping so I turned the pump off and released the pressure on the cold water side so I could pull the toilet water valve out to see if that was the problem. Well when I pulled the feed line off HOT!! water came pouring out, luckily there is enough slack in the line to have it drain into the shower. So what I found out is there was debri in the valve from what looked like the anode rod I just changed in the hot water tank. Traced the line back from the toilet and found my toilet is plumbed on the hot water side of the feed. Question is is this normal for better cleaning? And if it is not normal should I change it? Also if it is normal how do I keep anode rod material from plugging up the toilet spray port? Any info/ advice would be appreciated.

Not normal. Toilet needs to be hooked up to cold water line.

Alright thanks that’s what I figured, it’s has not been a problem for the last two years, but then again I don’t touch the water that comes into the toilet to check if it’s hot or cold, guess I’ll see if I can cap this line and tee off the bathroom sink.

Did you close the hot and cold (especially the cold) WH valves before you drained your plumbing system last year? If you didn't, you probably pulled crap from the WH backwards into the cold water line, and now it's in your toilet line.

Not sure what you mean by "released the pressure on the cold water side, but that could also easily allow hot water to flow backwards into the cold water line, and hence the toilet line, if you didn't close the cold water valve first. Especially if the toilet line comes off the cold water line very close to the WH.

There is an air bubble at the top of the WH and if the WH was under pressure, then this air is under pressure and could easily push quite a bit of hot water backwards into the cold line as it expands when you depressurize the system.

When I released the pressure I shut the pump off and turned on the bathroom faucet until no water came out to release the pressure but i opened just the cold side, this is the second trip in a month but the last trip I didn’t change the anode rod yet. I know it’s not backfeed because i pulled the feed line off after I let the hot water heater fill up again and come back up to temp and I did not drain the cold side and it was still hot water going into the toilet. I’m positive it’s a hot water line just wanting to know if someone is willing to touch the water that feeds their toilet to see if it hot or not( haha).

I'd have no qualms about a hot water flush.

It's certainly possible your toilet is hooked to the hot water line, but I'd be very surprised. I don't recall anyone ever reporting that issue. Have you actually followed the line hand-over-hand and verified it ties into the hot water line?

I'm not sure what you mean by "pulled the feed line off." If you mean you disconnected the cold water inlet line to the WH BEFORE you depressurized, I'd agree with you. But you couldn't have done this unless you'd closed the cold water valve first or the WH would have leaked out of the cold inlet. And even if you had closed the cold water valve, you'd still have had water all over the place because pulling off the line would have depressurized the cold side of the system by leaking out of the line.

And If you mean you disconnected your city water, that wouldn't change anything, either. Your city water connection has a built-in check valve that keeps pressure in the system when you disconnect the city water line.

Note also that unless you have a hot water check valve instead of a manual hot water valve (see options 4a, 4b, and 5 on pg 2 of attached diagram), depressurizing the cold side will also depressurize the hot side AND water will flow backward from the WH to the cold line.

And it's not changing the anode that gets the crap in the WH tank. It occurs naturally during operation (where do you think all that "missing anode" stuff goes?), so you've probably got 2 years of calcium carbonate "crap" laying in the bottom of your WH.

Same thing happen to my toilet at home many years ago. It was the diverter valve in the Shower that was causing hot water to flow into the cold water line and then to the toilet when I flushed.

Yes, that's another possibility.

Check that both the outside and inside shower faucets are fully closed. If they aren't, but that little button that shuts off the shower head is closed, then you've tied the cold side to the hot side. But I'd be surprised on this, too, unless he had been running water to the toilet for some time (a minute or more).

Yeah I traced it back and it’s tied into the hot water side on the bathroom faucet I can pull the toilet line and hold the hot water line under the bathroom sink, and when I say “feed line” I’m referring to the line that is threaded into the back of the toilet on the toilet water Valve. I was not hooked up to city water because I was dry camping.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I was unaware that hot water fed my toilet for the last few years and couple dozen trips and everything worked fine so I will leave it as is and just flush my WH tank better when I change my anode, thanks for all the input guys.

It is supposed to be cold water.. can't imagine someone making the mistake of using the hot. Mine are coded blue=cold, red=hot (as is the norm) someone must have been color blind.

What I also noticed is under my bathroom sink where the water filter is and the backside of the outdoor shower there isn’t a single red or blue water line, they are all braided clear lines. So I guess my trailer got the short end of the stick on the leftover water line.

Are you completely certain that it was hot water feeding the toilet? How long did you let the water go before you decided it was hot?

I only ask because I have seen scenarios in my camper where sometimes the toilet water is hot. But I was able to determine that the reason it was hot was because my hose outside from the campground water supply to the RV water inlet was in the sun. So the water in the hose got very hot, whether I turned on the cold faucet, or flushed the toilet, the water that was supposed to be cold, came out hot. After 10 seconds it was cold again.

Just wanted to mention that before you take the time and effort to make any plumbing changes to your RV. Now, it very well might be plumbed wrong, but just a heads up

Yeah it’s hot, the water being supplied was from my fresh water tank, so the bathroom faucet waschecked and cool water on cold side and hot on hot side, then when the toilet was fixed after clearing the clog I let the WH fill again and come back up to temperature, then I pulled the toilet feed line off again and it was flowing hot water.

If you've verified it's tied into the hot line, then that's your reason for hot water to the toilet. Might even be a positive, if it helps break down the stuff in your black tank.

Not normal, but dont see where it can hurt anything. Little wastful but no biggie. We honestly dont heat water other than when we plan to shower. So I fix if I have nothing to do.... Or leave it.

Our older trailer (2002 SOB) is completely done in white.

I don't think it will hurt any thing, but that is a major factory screw-up. If still under warranty, I would make 'em fix it. If not, I would fix it myself because it would drive me nuts--OCD.

Not the first time plumbing in RV or house has been crossed up.

Hmmm, hot water in toilet! Ouch, your lobster will really get steamed!
