Side to side, just like it does w/o a towel bar. I did not feel motivated enough to go out and take a pic of my sliding bathroom door in the camper, so I found a pic online to substitute. Hang a towel bar on the side of the door you can see in the photo and it will slide fine. Hang one on the other side. not so much. It is a sliding door, NOT a pocket door.

I would never hang a wet towel on a RV stained door,,, it will destroy the finish !!!

If you use the right bar the towel never touches the door...mine does not and a bathroom towel is not usual very wet...damp possibly. I have had mine mounted as I have show for a couple years and we seasonal for 6 straight months is soggy New England. Door is fine..yes the crappy RV door.

Just make sure the stand off distance from the door is a few inches. Some are close to the wall some are a few inches. The bar is better than what FR put in the bathroom which was wire rack thingy that kept the towels against the wall....yah then we would get damp spots on the wall and some light mildew because air could not flow behind the towels

This is why I used a bar and not command strip hooks on the wall. I did not want a damp towel laying up against the wall or anything. The bar keeps it an inch or more off the door.
