Installing Towel Bars on Bathroom Door

New 2906WS, want to install towel bars on sliding door. Looking for ideas on fastening the bars to door, since most of the door is hollow. I know a lot of you have done this so appreciate your suggestions.

Have not installed on a hollow door, but if I did I would use hollow door anchors.

We used the 3M 'command strips' and they have worked great so far (over a year).

Best part is I can remove the hooks and not worry about filling a couple of holes.

Depends what type of mounting base is on your towel rack. You may have to mount the base plate on a host and then mount the host with Command pads! Yes your/our hollow core doors have "Honeycomb cardboard sandwiched" between the faces! Youroo!!

Molly

Use an anchor called a hollow door molly. Home depot or Loews do not carry them in my area. Go to a hardware store and a knowlegable sales person (meaning the old guy standing in the back) should be able to help you find them and explain how to install them.

If possible, get the towel/coat hooks that go over the top of the door. They can be screwed down to the top of the door

I just screwed the brackets into the door in my last two units. The screws alone hold just fine.

You can also add "auto tape" behind the mount. Some call it "molding tape."

"super strong" is 3M's description

Our Windjammer came with a towel bar mounted on the swinging bathroom door. It is 18" wide and is screwed into the solid edges of the door. We could put up to a 24" bar on the door.

How do you put anything on a sliding door? it seems to me it would hit the door jam and keep the door from closing.

I thought I was the only one that saw that. I figured it could be interesting to watch. Lol

I guess I would put it on the side away from the wall, unless it's a pocket door, which I highly doubt. My Windjammer has a swinging door on one side of the bathroom and a sliding door on the other side. I could put a towel bar on the sliding door, but it would be on the bedroom side of the door.

I put two towel bars on my bathroom door. Since the towel bars did not go to the edge they did not hit the solid wood in the edge so....the screws pulled out when someone leaned on them a bit.

I suppose if you made sure or could get a towel bar that is the right length so the screws hit the outer inch of the door then you would hit the wood core.

Solved that by doing what someone else said. I bought a nice piece of hobby oak at lowes and cut it the length of the bar. mounted the bar to that then I had enough contact area to mount it to the door. Now..I used 6 screws and counter sunk them and made it nice nice.

I am the oddball out...I am not a huge command strip fan. Not knocking command strips as I do use them here and there.

Anyway I mounted two bars on the back of the door as I had nowhere else to do it actually. So there is a bar above the one in the pic near the top of the door. I don't like towels laying on each other or they wont dry so..ya know had to separate them.

After I thought you could also get a towel bar that is slightly longer the the width of the door and cut the bar down so the brackets fit to the door edge. The bar is hollow brushed nickel would take 30 seconds with a hacksaw to cut it to the exact length.

I have a swinging door and screwed two towel racks directly into to it. No problems after 5 years and over 20,000 miles. There are always wet towels on them when we travel. They must be on there pretty good.

Nice job; looks really sharp.

Sorry not enough info, it hangs from top and slides inside on bathroom wall. It is not pocket door. One side of door is always exposed. Only place to hang a rack in this design.
