No you don't have to disconnect the switch if it is bad. If it doesn't work it will not casue anything unsafe. It just the cheap internal parts won't come together to complete the circuit.
I had one go bad years ago and I took it out and some wood chips were messing it up. Shook it a few times and all was working again.
You never mentioned what actually was bad in your power cord on your first trip out. Did they just replace the whole cable and all was working?
