That is good news as I have always used a Tom Tom and I was thinking about one

I have a free app on my phone called Waze. Love it. It will tell you were police, accidents etc in real time.

I have the garmin 760. Bought it based on any review I could find rated it number 1, the Amazon user rating were significantly higher, last but not least we got on sale for 300. It is the non back up camera version but I can add it for 150.

Looked at the app versions and data was a concern. My wife and I did try on a few hour trip and found it used less then a 100kb an hr so may not be a huge deal.

So far I have not had much of a chance to try it out. It will route you based on the info you out in, heights of bridges are considered, tunnels for propane and such. There are a lot of free poi files you can add from user based website that increase the database.

One issue I have, North of the border it appears to do fine on major routes and cities, side towns RV information on bridge heights and what not does not exist.

Yes I have used Google Maps, I use it as a backup to my GPS. One time I had a Tom Tom take me into a town and then it quit giving me directions. If it wasn't for the navigation in my cell phone I'd probably still be going round in circles in that town

We started off with Tom-Tom's and, at first, they were great but the last one we bought had serious issues and almost zero tech-support so we bought a Garmin and LOVE it! It has free lifetime map upgrades, too. (It's a 5-inch, model 52LM)

There's also a Garmin friction mount available which is great because you can grab the entire thing and move it from vehicle to vehicle or store it inside something when you stop. (I've known people who've had their windows smashed and one thing they took was the GPS.)

But now we have GPS in my new Tundra so I'm not sure if I'll even use my Garmin now.

The only thing I would be leery of using the built in GPS is it taking you someplace you can't go with your trailer. I had one of my Garmin units take me down a country road to one lane Tunnel with only 10 foot of clearance and no place to turn around, I had no other choice but to take a chance and go through which I made it through okay, but the RV dealer said I'm the only person he knows of who has went through there and not ripped the air conditioner off the top of the trailer. That is why I use the Rand McNally unit now. You put all of your trailer specs into the unit and it won't route you were you can't go.

X3 for the Garmin - it has bridge heights road avoidance and a variety of other RV-specific info. In fact, you can set your RV profile in the GPS and it will route you around the "Bad places" (e.g., 13' RV means no routes with overpasses less than 13'!!)

Also, look in to ProClip (www.proclipusa.com I think) they make custom mounts for GPSs, phones & tablets that just work! we have mounts for our iPhone 6s and the Garmin in our Truck - MUCH better than the windshield or sandbag mounts!

While I haven't sprung for the "Trucker/RV" Garmin I have used Garmin products for years. Started with the one that had a hard drive inside. I have a friend with a Lexus whose built in unit stopped giving directions about 3 blocks from our destination in a small town in NC.

Another friend bought a Tom-Tom and literally threw it out the window when it said "no further directions available".

I also noticed that lots of the private planes use Garmin GPS and some other Garmin brand electronic equipment.

Garmin for me all the way. But, be sure to update the maps every couple of years.

Bill

I have never had my Tom Tom say that in the years that I have had it.

Thanks for the input. We ended up purchasing a Garmin and really love it.
