Looking for a good RV GPS receiver

I'm in the market for a decent RV receiver. Has anyone found one they like? I would really appreciate any recommendations.

Garmin RV 760LMT

We have the Garmin RV 760LMT and really like it. It has many more features than we use but it is a nice big screen and easy to use.

We have a Rand-McNally (branded as a Good Sam from Camping World) 7" and really like it, except that on bright, sunny days, it is difficult to see the screen. I even put one of those cheapie sunshades on it. It helped some, but it is still difficult to see. Maybe a wider sunshade might help...mine is about 1" wide across the top of the screen, tapering down to flush as it goes down either side of the screen.

But as far as features, information available, and ease of use, I like it.

Garmin has imho out performed any of the other GPS's. They've been in the business from the beginning and they seem to have put an effort into offering useful easily used features.

Whatever you get make sure you opt for the Life-Time map updates. We have a Garmin and it only cost $30 more than the base unit for the version with Life-Time updates (4 updates/year).

Here's a recent review from PC Mag:
The Best GPS Devices | PCMag.com

CNET also is an excellent source of info:
Best GPS systems of 2014 - CNET

And if you search on Amazon, Garmin are the most popular.

If you are looking for In-Dash (i.e. double DIN), Kenwood is very popular on this forum.

GPS

We use Rand McNally from camping world....could not ask for a better GPS. The sun does fade the screen however move it to place where the sun don't shine...it will work in other paces other than the dash top. I keep mine on the left side of the dash ...slanted to the right

We bought the Rand Mcnally.....5"...after a good friend who had the 7" suggested that it was too big to suit him. We like the unit just fine.

Does any of these GPS give you bridge heights, I think this is one thing I would be looking for.

I have owned a Garman GPS unit since 2007 and has been great and dependable. I highly recommend it!

GPS Thought

I have the Rand McNally GPS app on my pad and it works great. Big bright screen and if you have an ipad it is cheaper than buying the dedicated unit. Just food for thought.

Google map vs Garmin

Has anyone used and been satisfied with Google map on cell phone for navigation? In my experience Google map has been accurate more often than built-in navigation systems on my cars. My only concern is the data usage for Google map over hours but I have no information on that.
I don't own a Garmin so can't compare. But I thought RV specific information on Garmin could be easily accessible on internet.
Obviously Garmin's advantage over phone is coverage.

I'm also interested in this. The Garmin website does not mention this feature.

The Garmin 760LMT (which I also recommend) does not give you bridge heights ...BUT...you set the height of your rig and it will not route you under bridges or tunnels with lower overhead clearance. I'm not sure how complete or accurate THAT data is north of the border but it has worked well down south and along the east coast.

High All: I use Co-Pilot on my tablet with a Ram mount and have been very happy. The program has RV programing with bridge limitations. For under $20.00 It is A fabulous program. It will run on Apple and Android. Check it out. Frank

Apparently... there IS a database of low bridge clearances available for MANY units as a downloadable POI file. Gives EXACT heights on over 5000 spots. Anyone tried it? $15 bucks .... for iitial and a year of updates. Also has a separate Canadian POI ...

Hi: If you use any of the following map programs, CoPilot, Delorme, MS Streets and Google Earth you can get a ton of map overlays free from this location. MAP OVERLAYS along with instructions on usage. Frank

Note: MS Streets will no longer be available.
