LP Plumbing

I have an 8280 5th wheel with an LP problem. On the curb side is a tank and a regulator with automatic switchover. There is a pigtail that goes directly from that tank to the regulator. The driver side tank is connected to a flexible pipe that goes to the second input on the curbside switching regulator. However, on the driver side, there is also a red regulator in the line. The regulator on the curb side seems to be exactly the same where the curbside tank is connected as to where the driver side tank pipe comes in. So, why is there an extra regulator on the driver side tank? This matters because the regulator on the driver side is leaking through a small hole on the regulator itself. I assume the hole is there for atmospheric venting, but apparently the diaphram inside must have a hole in it. Since the regulator on the curb side seems to be an auto switching two stage regulator, why do I need the one on the driver side?

I also have a 8280 . The regulator on the driver side is a high pressure regulator . It takes the tank pressure and reduce it to approx . 10lbs . The switch over regulator on the curb side is a dual stage regulator that takes tank pressure and the reduced pressure from the driver side down to approx . 11" of water colloum . You are correct that the regulator on the driver side has to be replaced . Good luck .

Thanks, but I don't see the need for the driver side regulator, since the switchover regulator is two stage. What am I missing?

The piping would have to be changed from the regulator on the driver's to the change over regulator so that you would not have high pressure gas going from one side to the other . Now the pressure is approx 10 lbs , without the regulator the pressure could be as high as 100lbs or higher .

Ok. That makes sense. Now I just have to find a Stage 1 regulator. I'm ok for now just running on the one tank, as all I need is just to keep the fridge going on a 6 hour trip. I just turned off the driver side tank. Thanks for the help.

So I guess this implies that the hose running from driver side to curb side isn't rated for 100 psi. I am surprised at that, as it looks just like the pigtail hose.

Just a WAG but perhaps this is done because of the distance between the driver side cylinder and the changeover regulator on the passenger side cylinder?

A store that sells grills or if your dealer is close enough that would work . Maybe the Internet .

When mfg first started the opposing side cylinders, they did just run a high pressure line accross. But there were several connections because they did away with rubber and plumbed hard line. These connections were prone to leakage due to high pressure. Then they came up with the 10 psi red reg...much safer and still supplies the 2 stage with adequate pressure. Sometimes those 2 stages will bleed back through. Verify with soap no leaks through the red reg vent before you use...

That is the problem I am having, the red regulator is leaking gas through the vent hole. My trailer has a rubber hose running from the driver side to the two stage auto switching regulator. If I just attached the driver side pigtail to the rubber hose, I would have 2 less connections. By the way, I read the UL label on the 12' hose and it is rated for 360 Psi, so it seems to me that the red regulator on the driver side tank is superfluous, and just something else to go wrong. If I were worried about the 12' hose breaking, the pigtail already has a blowout protection valve in it. I'll continue to research, but right now my inclination is just to take the regulator out, and hook the pigtail directly to the 12' line that goes over to the auto switching regulator.

As far as I can tell, all the regulators carried by grill stores are low pressure regulators and are not suited for this application.

Well, I read up on the NFPA standard 1192 for RV's, and it requires a regulator not greater than 30 psi within 60 inches of the tank, so at least I know why it is there.
