Lug Nut outer shell cracked and came off.

I have a 2018 Rockwood signature ultra light 5th wheel. One of the wheel lugs had to be forcefully removed when the aluminum shell on the lug cracked and came apart. I went to a local Auto Zone and they didn't have a replacement but the salesman said the thread was 12mm and the pitch is 1.25. Stamped on the lug casing is 12-20. Does anyone know the correct size and where I can get a quick replacement? Leaving for Michigan UP next week. On the good lugs I use either a 19mm socket or 3/4 inch to remove them.

I had the same problem with my Freedom Express. The "12-20" is 1/2"x20tpi thread stud size which is a standard lug nut size. I bought a set of solid polished chrome lug nuts on Amazon for about $16. The one thing you need to look at is are yours conical, flat or ball base. The most common is conical (basically a slight taper inward towards the stud, but the taper is a flat taper. The ball will have a curved taper and flat has no taper). Other than that, they are pretty much a standard item. Also a 19mm lug nut will work with a 3/4" socket (19mm and 3/4" are same size).

Here is a tip to get the one with the broken cap off if you have not done so or have another one break. Use a 18mm deep well socket and gently tap it on before trying to spin it off (I used an 18mm, 6 sided impact rated socket on mine). It should grab the shoulders of the lug nut which is underneath that aluminum or stainless cap (take the broken cap off) and let you get the lug off the stud. The inner steel nut is slightly smaller than the 19mm/3/4" cap. Once you break it free and mostly off the stud, wiggle the socket off the broken lug core and spin it off by hand the rest of the way (since you tapped it on it may be hard to remove by hand once totally off the stud). This worked for me on 3 I've had that split which is why I just bought a whole new set of solid ones.

Apparently the RV service center used the biggest air gun on earth to put mine on. I had a heck of a time getting them off and ended up splitting 3 of the caps in the process. I could not even break them free with a 1,150 pound HD impact gun and ended up squirting some liquid wrench on them and letting them sit overnight. They came off the next day (after I had split 3 trying already). Use a torque wrench and set to the proper torque when installing the new lug nuts.

This is the set I bought. I only needed a set of 20 as my axles are 5 lugs per wheel, double axles; but they also have them in sets of 24 for 6 lugs per wheel, etc...

I would verify that is 12mm first. Odd size, and the stamp sounds more like 1/2-20 thread. I just replaced all mine with Gorilla Lifetime. Pricey, but when they rust I will return them.

Most tire stores that sell custom wheels would have something that would work if they are the same taper that cars use.

Depending on where in the U.P. your at, there's Hilltop RV, US Highway 41 W, Ishpeming, MI or N Lincoln Rd Escanaba MI for good RV service. That is my go to place in the U.P.

A 12 X1.25 is metric sizing (12mm X 1.25) and 1/2X20 is imperial. I doubt you have metric sizing on the RV, and it's imperial 1/2" X20.


If you try to put a metric lug nut onto an imperial sized stud, you will ruin both.

Amazon has chrome replacement lug nuts in all sizes and can get them to you in 2 days... I replaced all my covered lug nuts on the trailer with solid ones and on my tow vehicle also. Most autopart stores have a sizing chart/studs that will tell you the correct size. Make ssure you get the correct shoulder size also... ( the part that contacts the wheel). You may be able to buy one or a pack of 5 to make sure you have the right size before buying an entire package of 20 for 4 wheels.

I have a 2018 Mini Lite with Dexter torsion axles. They use 1/2 X 20 lug nuts and you need a 3/4 inch socket.

My Flagstaff Signature is the sister to yours.
It uses 1/2x20 lug nuts.
Most every tire dealer/auto dealer/parts store in our town has them.
They even sell the solid version with no chrome cap.
Lots available online as well.

Ours use ½" x 20 tpi lug nuts. I replaced all them with solid stainless steel lug nuts from etrailer. They work and look great.
