Wow that's terrible great to hear that nobody was injured.
I had every intention of purchasing these steps for my 2019 Ultra Lite 2304 DS
but will now look at other options.

The GlowStep Revolution from Torklift look like a viable option.

If you don’t have the framing under the door for the traditional outside steps, then you’d have to go with Torklift’s Uprising steps that also mount just inside the door (I think).

The NEW GlowStep Revolution Uprising are mounted similar to the StepAbove.

Mine broke today. What a crash. I had emailed MorRyde about this and they had sent me '1' set. Easy to replace. The new one looks just like the old one.

This was on my Cedar Creek 5th wheel.

Well, it just happened to me on my new-to-me 2018 Rockwood 8290BS. I have the three step version. I just can’t figure out how to get the broken stud off if the strut. Any suggestions? I thought I would replace it with a grade 8 bolt for greater strength.

Pry the little metal clip off of the 'socket' end.

Our unit is a 2018 831CLBSS and I have had the lower ball stud break twice. I didn't think to contact MorRyde for replacements. I just bought some from my local RV dealer. Now I carry a couple extra with me in my tool box. I do however need the female side of these. Just in case I am not able to remove the broken stud the next time it snaps!

UPDATE

RV Step Upgrade
Let start-out stating Torklift provided us a set of GlowStep Revolution Uprising steps after they responded to post I placed on a forum regarding the failure of strut mount on my existing steps installed on our 5th wheel. Also let me say the instillation of the GlowStep was super easy, in fact it took me longer to remove the original steps. Basically you drill 6 7/32 holes bolt on the mounting plate set the steps in place and tighten down.

We found the steps almost as solid as the original steps we removed and the GlowStep are very simple to deploy but not as simple as our original steps if you are on a very level site. If you are in tight quarters or very un-level camp site there is no comparison and this where the GlowSteps shine. In tight quarters you only need enough room to fully open your door (30 1/2” in my case) to deploy the GlowStep as opposed to 44 1/2” with our original steps. If you have steps similar to our original steps I’m sure you have experienced a site that slops away on the door side where you did not have enough adjustment in the legs to reach the ground and had to put some blocking under the legs to use the steps only to discover the first step is 10” to12” off the ground, this is not the case with the GlowStep as they have an additional step under the bottom step you can deploy to compensate for the extra height.

Do you have a seasonal site but still do some camping off your seasonal site but cannot install a deck at your seasonal site because of your StepAbove steps? Well the GlowStep can be removed and reinstalled in seconds with no tools.

Don’t get me wrong we were satisfied with our original steps until the strut mount failed, the failure took place as I deployed the steps and had it been my wife or one of the grandchildren they may have been hurt. MorRyde was quick to send me a new strut mount and I believe the original mount was over torqued by the RV mfr. But given a choice between the two I would take the GlowStep Revolution Uprising.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about buying these same steps to replace my original ones just because they looked so heavy duty. Heavy duty only applies to the weakest link in the design though.

You helped me make the decision on if I wanted the assisted lift ones or just the ones that drop in place I can just toss in the back of my truck. Looks like I’ll be going with drop in place, no point paying extra for a more complicated install that breaks.

Moryde was good about sending one stud set but I had to buy the second one. They recommend 10 to 12 ft lbs of torque. I agree that a larger diameter stud is indicated. From the stand point of liability and product reputation the engineer/designers need to re-visit this part of the design. It would be a cheap fix and avoid a safety recall.

I don’t know how many people have had the ball studs fail twice but I replaced my MORryde steps with the new Torklift Glowstep Revolution steps. They are better but very pricey.

I couldn’t stand these steps on my rig. Took them off after 2 months. Pain in the royal ***** if you don’t have the feet set just perfect you run the risk of bending your door and screen door. Too many close calls for me so I took them off and sold them.

Did they happen to share the date range of that problem run?

Edit: thinking about this, it behooves me to unscrew the ball studs and retorque them to recommended specs. I'll measure the torque required to unscrew them and, if significant, may replace them before they break.

No they didn’t say when. My 5er was built in early April 2018 so maybe the steps were built within a few months before that? If they over-torqued them then the threaded part may have been compromised but it probably wouldn’t hurt to back off the nut and reset the torque.

I have made an alternate way to hold the steps up rather than depend on the strut/ ball stud pressure only. Any type of device to keep it vertical is better than having it come down when the door opens.

The design seems to have never been finished correctly. If they had investigated the failure modes they would have never let it into production.
