Exclamation MORryde StepAbove CAUTION

The ball stud securing the two highpressure assist struts broke and the steps dropped. Luckley I was putting the steps out and not my wife or granddaughter as the steps would have fallen on them. The ball studs are only 10mm and I believe they should have used the 13mm ball studs.

Have you posted this before? I swear this is identical to pictures posted on here in the past...

If it wasn’t you, seems like you’re not alone.

No, this happened on July 17th 2019. If there is another post then it even concerns me more that it could happen again.

The picture was taken on the island counter in our 8289WS

itat posted this on July 10th, but it’s not the post that ependydad and I are talking about with an almost identical picture to what you posted. I searched for that post and I can’t find it.

And it happened to Herk7769 last September:

The lower dual strut swivel had snapped off. My guess was the two struts hitting the floor was the noise I heard.

Some roadside repair was needed to get it closed again. The inboard strut kept keeping the ladder from fully retracting.

Quick call to Flagstaff, but they were closed. I have no doubt with a little coordination on Monday, the part I need will be waiting for me at the Grand Canyon Campground next week.

Here’s the post from itat with the pictures:

The bottom one broke and the top one bent as I was removing it because the struts are so strong. Have to put the replacements in with the steps in the stored position which means you need someone outside to put the steps up. At least I can’t lift them from inside and my arms won’t fit around the steps to be able to put them together from outside.

the early MORRyde steps did not have the struts therefore it wasn't an issue

One of the advantages of the Lippert steps over the MorRyde — they’re lighter and don’t really need the struts.

This just happened to us about two weeks ago when we were in Florida. Guess it's becoming a common issue on these steps. Seems to be poor design and not an adequate bolting system to support the struts. Where did you obtain a replacement bolt system?

Hi,

My Lippert steps (installed at the Rally several years ago) had the assist cylinder. I was given to understand it was a standard installation.

Perhaps this is because it's a four step model, which really would be sort of heavy to lift on its own.

FWIW.

I have the three-step version of the SolidStep without the assist. Obviously, the four-step version will be heavier, but with the three-step version on my Windjammer, my 95lb wife doesn’t have a problem lifting them or lowering them when I’m not around.

UPDATE

UPDATE; I contacted MorRyde and they are shipping me the replacment parts.

It is not that the steps are that heavy but when your normally put them down the struts are working it only requires one hand and you have to pull on them slighyly to get them down you are not prepared for the weight to drop on you when the stud breaks, it would be like the strut on your SUV rear hatch broke as you were pulling it closed.

Great service from MorRyde as they shipped me the replacement parts quickly. Alos great to see that they monitor this forum and contacted me.

I was also contacted by another step manufacture to try their steps but due to the fact that would have to modify my unit I decided to decline.

Thanks to both companies!

Just saw this thread now. MORryde also shipped me replacement ball studs and I’ve installed them. The rep I talked to claims they had a run where the workers over-torqued the ball studs. I’m talking to Torklift about the possibility of testing their new GlowStep Revolution Uprising steps if they can be installed without modifying the trailer.

The ball stud did look like it had been twisted due too much torque applied when installed.

The same thing happened to ours within a month of purchasing it new last July.
