Very good job Bruce. The pics really help a lot too. Like I said in earlier post, I will definitely be doing this mod on my WJ2809W.

Doesn't the 27VRL have drawers on the end of the cabinet where the extension goes? From what I've seen, the 27VRL extension must be the removable type that hooks into the brackets on the side of the cabinet. A drop down extension would appear to be a little inconvenient on that unit.

Yes, on both counts. Drawers and brackets above drawers. Hasn't been often we needed the addl. counter space

Well, I finished it up today by installing the bumper on the side of the cabinet. Here's a picture showing every part needed for this modification, including the bumper for the leg hardware:

Looks great, I wish mine would be so easy. My counter top is wider than the extension so where I would need to mount the brackets there is no real support. I really want to do this mod so I will probably try to find a matching piece of wood to put across the face of the cabinet to add more support. The other thing I noticed is that extension is fairly heavy, are you worried about it bouncing down the road? I think along with the bumper some way of holding it in it's storage position might be needed.

Mine is just like yours.I removed the L shaped brackets & replaced with 4" hinges cut down on one side to fit the slotted brackets. Will not travel with it in place but will put it on when set up & just fold & unfold as needed. When folded down it will be out of the way, but there & ready for use.

Wanted to let ya'll know that my mod with hinges worked ok, but not very pleased with it. So, I'll be trying something else as soon as I can think of something. Bruce's idea seems to be better, but I would have to add wood to support the brackets. Also with extension set up, very little space to get between table & counter, & I don't fit in small places very well any more. Will be watching this thread for ideas.

Papa GLS, I have the same wide counter in my WindJammer 3001. Can you share a picture of how you attached the hinges to the brackets, please? Before I saw your post I figured I would have to try to insert a matching piece of wood to support the hinge in the middle of the cabinet. Thanks, Jim

Very sorry Jim, but I don't know how to do the picture thing.
Just removed the "L" brackets & replaced with either 3 1/2" or 4" hinges, can't remember which, & cut down the side of hinge not screwed down to counter top to fit into the existing slotted brackets on the end of the cabinet. It actually worked pretty good, just wasn't pleased with it. Again, sorry about the no photo thing.

I tried Papa GLS's idea of the hinges. I happened to have a piano hinge laying around so I cut it to fit with a hacksaw. After all of that, I decided I didn't like "stock" extra shelf because the stability with one leg wasn't as good as I expected. And also the shelf not being as wide as the built in counter top made it not as useful. IMO, they should have made the shelf so the wide side was up against the built in. I think I am going to make my own using wood only. It will be the same width as the built in and probably not stick out as far as the original add on shelf. I am also going to try to get it to be level with built in instead of being lower and use permanent brackets like nomad297 did.

Keep us posted. Still like the idea, just something better than what I came up with.

It was a breeze to install and gives a tremendous amount of extra counter space. I stole the idea from a fifth wheel on the dealer's lot and used its VIN to get the right parts.

Great Job! I was thinking about maybe making mine level with the counter, also. Yours looks amazing!

We have been thinking about doing this too, checked Home Depot for matching countertop, then just ran across this thread. Where did you get your piece of matching countertop please?
We don't gave any numbers on the supports, if we call Forest River, would they understand what we want? Also, is the weight of it hanging down while traveling a problem as someone else mentioned? Wouldn't want the screws to work out.
Also, if you needed more support, couldn't you attach a board inside the cabinet so that it wouldn't show?
We have a 2015 3025W Windjammer.
Thanks.

I got my piece of countertop from Forest River. It was a couple hundred dollars. Ask them to send you the drop-down leg as well. I just used some folding shelf brackets I found at Amazon. I've had no problems while traveling, but I did put a nice bumper on the cabinet where the leg hardware meets it.
