It's lower than that...bottom left hand corner and its a toggle switch, think ours has On/Off written on it.

8289 Hot Water heater photo

Here is a photo of my hot water tank. Are the two black buttons the key?

First order of business...get good tires! Lost ALL 4 tires and rims our 1st trip out. We're warned by other RVer's but didn't think they could be that bad. WRONG!

The model number of the HWH will hold the key as to whether it is gas only, or gas and electric.

Suburban HWH's used to have a part number like SW6D. or SW6DE, the first being gas only (DSI ignition) and the second being DSI & electric.

What is the model number?

Look for the tag inside the door, or look at the build sheet for your RV.

Very far bottom left corner is where my on off switch is. Looks like your water heater differs from mine.

The switch is in the same place as posted above. All 8289WS come with it. Yours would be a first if it didn't. Behind the black rubber is your limit switches. There is a clip that runs through the rocker switch it has to removed to turn it on....

Mine is a sw6D, so I guess that is the answer. Thanks to everyone that commented on my question.

If that is what they put in then you have the WRONG W/H for that unit. That wouldn't be the first time they put something in wrong. I have not read the new specks on the unit, dose it say gas only W/H? I would be calling FR and find out. So you are the first? How cheap can they be getting? You want duel IMO. They have always did it, so what now why the change I would be on them with full force. You WANT the option and also the option for using both together for a faster recovery. I wouldn't drop the issue if I were you....Good Luck sorry they cheapened a great unit....

I think they put the wrong unit in yours. The sw6d wasn't even an option. Our 2015 came with the gas electric as standard equipment.

Dog piling...X2 what Glenn & Heavyodie said. I would push for a HWH replacement. The electric+gas is a BIG deal when you have several folks taking showers (we have occasional 'house guests' and NEVER run out of hot water even with 4 adults queued up for showers.

I have just talked to a dealer who went out and checked the 2016 units have both, he also called the factory and they said all 2016 8289 WS have both electric and gas options. So FR blew it and installed the wrong W/H in your unit. Hope that helps you....MAKE THEM PUT THE RIGHT ONE IN> This was givin to me by Clem's RV with dealerships in Penn. and Virginia. Like I said wouldn't be the first time FR installed the wrong unit. By the way welcome to the forum and you bought a great unit mine is a 2012 and we have had only minor problems that are expected. Hope this helps you get it straightened out. Also get rid of the Trail Express tires as soon as possible mine lasted 6000 miles, then I went with Marathon ST. made by GY.

I looked at the brochure and you are correct. Only HWH offered were combo gas and electric. We're camping between Dubuque Iowa and Galena IL and on our way home tomorrow. I'll find out more next week. I have to say, we really like our 5er, and our truck. Thanks for all the help. gljurczyk

Late to this conversation, we brought our 2015 same model home a couple of weeks ago.
The switch is HIDDEN behind the other parts of the water heater. Turn you head about 90 degrees, bend down and you will see it.
One of those "once you know where it is, easy to find" things, but until you know exactly where it is, you will never see it. LOL

Mark, you are exactly correct. I went out with a flashlight and found it. So the big clue for me was the photo that showed the same electrical components. It just had to be and other than feeling foolish, I feel gratitude for all the help.

Don't feel foolish, now you know where it at and saved you from having the trailer tore up by the dealer....Safe travels to you

8289ws electric water heater

Look on the water heater for the electric "rocker switch". It's likely obscured by the valve and burner tube. It's black and may have a small cotter key which needs to be removed to turn the switch on. It is not labled except for the on/off position indicater. Make sure the tank is full before switching it on and switch it off before draining the tank.

Good luck!

Same with the 2015s.
