New Rockwood 2902WS

Just pulled the trigger on a new Rockwood Ultra Lite 2902WS. Upgrading from a Mini Lite 2504s, which we enjoyed but decided we want a private bedroom and a permanent bed. We love the floor plan and all the seating and sleeping options for guests. The kitchen has good counter space and has a huge pantry. Unfortunately, it also requires that we upgrade our tow vehicle. We're leaning toward an F150 with ecoboost. Anyone have this camper, and if so, what are you towing with?

You have a 6800 lbs dry weight so 500 to 1000 loaded weight. So you are going to be around 7000 plus lbs. Your hitch weight will be around 800 plus or minus depending on your loading. Now where a number of people don't check is your GVWR of your truck. Sure a f250 can tow 9000 lbs but what is the load capacity. This all includes people, fuel, gear and hitch weight. I fell into that where I maxed out on my gvwr on my gmc 1500. So I am upgrading to a 2500hd diesel. My tow weight is about 8,000 and a tongue weight of 1000 lbs.

Be sure to just check out your GVWR, Axles ratings both truck and trailer and GVWR.

Then you should be able to make a decision. I personally like to have 15 to 25% reserve for safety purposes.

Go with a 3/4 ton truck and an Equalizer 4 point hitch setup.

That is a good size trailer to be pulling with a half ton truck,You don't see too many people complaining of too much truck,do yourself a favor and go with a 3/4 ton truck save yourself the white knuckle moments and be relaxed when you get to your destination,instead of dreading the trip back home.

We ordered a 2906ws 5 weeks ago. Waiting for it to come in. I have a F150 that we will use locally this year. Hopefully a 250 of 350 next year. We plan on going some out west trips so I will feel very comfortable with the diesel.

We pull our RW2703ws with an F150 EB and have no problems. I did so some things to improve the experience though. Airlift airbags, lt tires, and the equalizer 4 wdh. All good.

Congrats on your new ULTRA LITE 2902WS. It would be nice if you could get a 3/4 ton to tow that, that is a long TT and the weight can get up to 8000 lbs. I go by the total weight and not the dry weight, you can go with the F-150 with the max tow package but I would make sure that it's the max tow package.


I like to leave myself some room so the 3/4 will be perfect.

Go check out the F150's , tow capabilities of up to 11,300 lbs and payload well over 2000 lbs, there not what they used to be. We tow a Rockwood 5th wheel "8289WS" and we are within all limits and set the cruise for 65.

You'll find that the vast majority of Ecoboost owners will tell you that you'll have no problem pulling that rig with one. I towed a TT at around 9500 with a 2013 EB I had and had no problems and no complaints. I upgraded ONLY because I needed to have the ability to tow heavy loads without WD. So, go with the Max Tow version and get a good WDH such as the Equalizer 4 point and you'll be in good shape.

Because the truck has to be my daily commute vehicle too, I really want to stay with the F150. We found a Lariat Ecoboost with tow package that should meet the need. And it has the large tow mirrors. Bonus!!

I have a 2013 F150 SCREW 4WD with max tow, 6.5 ft bed, tow mirrors, 36 gal fuel tank and 3.73 rear end. Does a great job of handling my 2017 Flagstaff 832 IKBS. I personally feel my weakest link is the Pirrelli P20" tires. Otherwise good. BTW...nice looking redF150! Have fun.

Agreed, depending on the type of terrain your on, i.e. mountains and steep hills and valleys I may be more cautious but I think manageable if your reasonable with your expectations you should be fine. I have been towing a FR 292BHDS since 2012 no issues what so ever. With a 2012 Ford FX 4. 5.0 lt 3.73 gearing and towing package. I did add helper springs to stiffen up the back end.

We pull it with a Toyota Tundra. No problems at all. Obviously you need a weight distributing hitch and sway control and a brake controller but other than that you should be fine.

The important factors to take in consideration is your stamped GVWR, GCWR and axle ratings. Staying within them, in your comfort zone for safety margin. I personally went to a 3/4 ton diesel for 8,000 lbs trailer. I like the exhaust brake feature.
