[ThanksQUOTE=Hoo Dad;277595]BTW Ralph...Nice Truck. [/QUOTE]
Thanks. Its a new addition. Just completed the break-in towing the rv. Like the truck too, a real upgrade from the 2001 Silverado 1500.

&$%$#$%( water filter
We purchased our Mini Lite in April 2012. Last travel trailer did not have a on board H2O filter, so.......when the new trailer got home, I went to exploring our new toy. Found the water filter, in a semi awkward spot, and it was full of water. Genius that ran us around the trailer, when we had our run around inspection, did not mention the filter, except that it was in there. He pointed to the locked pass thru door. Well, since we do not boondock, I decided to remove the filter container, and get rid of the water. The filter was rolling around in the pass thru. I put a bucket under the filter canister, and followed the instructions in the book. Seems the "kunckle dragger"' that prepped our trailer, put his muscle into putting the canister on. I found the wrench on the other side of the pass thru, along with some other stuff. Finally got the canister off, and cleaned up the water that missed the bucket. Also found some extra screws that some one left behind. I put the filter in the canister and put the canister back on. We use an external filter, from Wally World. Removal of the filter and clean up of the mess took about 1.5 hours.
All the children in the neighborhood learned new words during the whole process.

Alternate to removing filter housing is to place kit consisting of two circular plates (one metal the other plastic) at top of filter housing. The kit blocks AF from entering housing. Trying this solution this winter. Anyone else use this solution?? If so any comments

Or spend just a few bucks more and get a filter with a built in bypass valve.
ALL RVs that come with a filter should come with THIS one or one like it!
Whole House Filter with Bypass Valve - Sam's Club
Keep in mind even with a bypass valve you still need to remove the
canister and drain it for winterization.

If I totally bypass the filter and use my outside filter setup, can I trust the sharkbite or Gator connections as a permanent solution or do I need to get the pex crimper and go that route?

The 5 or 10 inch dimension is for the height of the filter. The top OD is a common dimension.
Sears has tons of stuff - still.

I can take a picture of the work I did if it would help.

I did the same thing. After laying on my back and slidding into the front storage to remove the filter i said this is the last time. The gator fittings work great.

We removed ours 1 week after buying the 5th wheel; we now use a Waterwise distiller for drinking/cooking; an outside sediment filter, and a undercounter filter in the lav. Much happier!

I simply bought a $3.00 gas siphon at Walmarts and drop the filter, insert the hose, squeeze the bulb once and drain the water. I leave it in the compartment for next time.
